If Spotify Premium Student appears as Free in the app, first check your plan on Spotify’s Account Overview. If that page says Premium Student, the app may be signed into a different account or holding stale session data. If it also says Free, investigate activation, renewal, billing, or eligibility before reinstalling the app.
Check whether Premium Student is active
- In a browser, open Spotify Account Overview and look under Your plan. Note the plan and the account identity shown.
- In the mobile app, tap your profile picture, then Settings and privacy, and check the displayed account and plan status.
- Compare the email address or username and sign-in method in the browser and app. An email login, Apple login, Google login, or Facebook login can lead to different Spotify accounts.
The account page is the better first check because the app’s Free label alone cannot tell you whether Premium is inactive or the app is using another account. Spotify’s plan troubleshooting guidance recommends signing out and back in when the account page shows Premium but the app shows Free.
If Account Overview says Premium Student but the app says Free
Treat this first as an account or session mismatch, not proof that your Student subscription has ended.

- Confirm that Account Overview shows Premium Student on the account you intended to use.
- In the app, sign out of Spotify.
- Sign back in using the same login method and credentials as the account showing Premium Student in the browser.
- Check the plan label again and test a Premium feature, such as offline listening or ad-free playback.
Pay particular attention if you have multiple accounts, use “Continue with Apple” or “Continue with Google,” verified Student eligibility while signed into a different account, or use a shared device. If the page and app still disagree after signing back in, contact Spotify Support and report that Account Overview shows Premium Student while the app shows Free.

If Account Overview also says Free
The plan is not active on that account, or the account is not the one where the subscription was started. Check the plan and any listed billing or renewal information before trying app fixes: reinstalling cannot activate an uncompleted subscription or restore an expired one.
SheerID approved you, but you did not finish subscribing
Student verification and Premium activation are separate steps. SheerID confirms eligibility; Spotify still needs you to complete the plan signup.
- Complete the Student verification form and provide the requested enrollment information or documentation.
- Wait for SheerID’s confirmation. Spotify says verification can take several days.
- Follow the confirmation email back to Spotify, while signed into the intended Spotify account.
- Select and complete the Premium Student subscription flow, then check Account Overview for the active plan.
A verification confirmation by itself does not establish that Spotify has put the account on a paid Student plan. See Spotify’s Premium Student eligibility and signup information.

Your annual Student renewal may have expired
Spotify requires Student subscribers to reverify eligibility every 12 months. Its US support information describes eligibility for up to four years, with annual renewal—not an unconditional four-year subscription. Spotify says it sends a renewal email about four weeks before expiration, but you can also check the account page and renew there. Missing renewal can end the discount; the subscription may continue at the full price or require reactivation depending on the account and region. See Spotify’s Student discount renewal guidance.
If you remain eligible, start renewal from the account or Student page and complete verification again. Check spam or junk folders for a renewal message, but rely on the account page to confirm the current plan. If you changed schools or countries, review the region and institution requirements before retrying.
Check payment, cancellation, and partner billing
Review Your plan for the next billing date or a pending cancellation, and check Spotify’s billing notices and your payment provider for a declined or failed payment. A bank charge alone does not prove that Premium Student activated; confirm the plan in Account Overview.

Spotify’s US Student support page says Premium Student cannot be paid through mobile billing or another company, such as a phone or internet provider. If a carrier or other partner controls your existing subscription, that partner may need to handle cancellation before you can subscribe directly to Student. Follow the account’s cancellation and billing instructions rather than assuming the app label is a cache problem.
Check country and payment eligibility
Spotify says students studying abroad can still qualify, but the Spotify account country or region must match the country where they study, and the payment method must be issued there. A move, overseas card, or VPN can complicate the match; do not use a VPN to try to bypass eligibility. Student pricing and included benefits vary by country. Spotify also says the email address used for student verification does not have to be registered on the Spotify account, so a .edu address on the account is not a requirement.
Your institution may not be eligible
If your school does not appear in the SheerID verification form, Spotify says it is not eligible for the discount at that time. That is an eligibility or institution-recognition issue, not an app synchronization problem.

If SheerID verification is stuck or rejected
Use Spotify’s Student verification troubleshooting page for verification issues; Spotify routes the verification process to SheerID.
Use current-term enrollment documents
Spotify says an official college or university document should show your first and last name, school name, and an issue date from the current academic term or within the previous three months. Examples include an official enrollment letter, current class schedule, registration or tuition receipt, or transcript showing classes in progress. An acceptance letter alone does not meet the listed requirements.

Spotify says the document-upload link is valid for seven days. If it has expired, return to the verification page and start the process again to generate a new link. SheerID allows up to three document-review requests before you need to contact SheerID support, so submit a clear, current document that includes the required details instead of cycling through unsuitable files.

Retry the activation flow in a private window
- Open a private or incognito browser window, preferably on a desktop.
- Open the SheerID confirmation link and make sure Spotify is signed into the account you want to subscribe.
- Complete Spotify’s Premium Student subscription flow.
- Check Account Overview, then sign out and back into the app if the plan is active there but not in the app.
If the document or enrollment verification is failing, contact SheerID through Spotify’s verification help page. If verification succeeded but the plan or payment is missing, contact Spotify Support.
If Spotify says the offer was already redeemed
Spotify Community guidance lists several possibilities: an activation link expired, verification is still pending, the existing Student discount is still active and it is too early to renew, or the Student credentials are linked to another Spotify account. Check the Student page while signed into the intended account and confirm the current plan before starting again. If an active discount is near its end, wait until the renewal window rather than trying repeatedly. If your verification is attached to the wrong account or the message persists, contact Spotify Support. See Spotify Community’s Student discount error-message guidance.
US offer details are not worldwide terms
As displayed on Spotify’s US Student page on August 16, 2026, the offer was one free month for eligible new subscribers, then $6.99 per month, with Hulu with Ads included at no extra cost. The page describes eligibility for students aged 18 or older at an eligible US Title IV-accredited college or university. These are US offer details and can change; check the US Student page for current terms, and do not assume that the price or Hulu bundle applies elsewhere.

Previous Premium subscriptions or certain previous trials can affect eligibility, and the introductory offer can generally be redeemed only once per Spotify account. After the trial, the then-current Student price applies unless you cancel. Other countries have different prices and post-eligibility outcomes; for example, Spotify’s country-specific Student page illustrates why US terms should not be generalized.
Who to contact
- Contact Spotify Support for account identity, plan status, billing, payment failures, cancellation, or Student activation after successful verification.
- Contact SheerID through Spotify’s verification help page for verification status, rejected documents, upload links, or enrollment and institution checks.
When you ask for help, state what Account Overview shows, what the app shows, which account you checked, and whether SheerID approved your enrollment. That makes it clearer whether the issue is account access, verification, activation, or billing.
