Spotify Free users can generally see lyrics while streaming, after Spotify reversed its 2024 restriction. But access is not guaranteed for every song, country, or device, and offline lyrics are a separate Premium feature.
What changed with Spotify lyrics?
Spotify tested requiring Premium for lyrics with some users in 2023. In May 2024, more Free users reported a limit commonly set at three songs per month, or a prompt to upgrade. The rollout was not uniform: the restriction varied across accounts and experiences, rather than switching on for every Free user worldwide.

On July 30, 2024, Spotify said it was expanding lyrics access again to Free users. Reports at the time said Spotify had raised the monthly limit before the broader restoration, but the company did not publish a permanent, universal number. The company described its approach as testing and iteration; it did not give a detailed reason for the reversal. The timing followed user complaints, but Spotify did not say that backlash alone caused the decision. Engadget’s account of the reversal covers the reported cap and Spotify’s statement.
That change is distinct from Spotify’s February 2026 lyrics updates, which added or expanded features including translations, previews, and offline lyrics. Reporting on that update described offline lyrics as a Premium feature; it did not make ordinary online lyrics Premium-only again. TechCrunch’s coverage of the update explains the distinction.

Can Spotify Free users see lyrics now?
Yes, generally. Spotify’s support page lists lyrics for both Free and Premium users. It also cautions that availability can vary by market, device, song, and rights-holder agreement. That means “available to Free users” is not a promise that every track will display lyrics everywhere. Spotify’s lyrics support page gives the current guidance.
Online lyrics and offline lyrics are different features. A Free user may see lyrics while streaming, where supported; the offline lyrics feature reported in 2026 is associated with Premium and may depend on rollout, device, and market.

How to show lyrics in the Spotify mobile app
- Play an audio track and open the Now Playing view.
- Look beneath the album art or in the lyrics area for a synchronized preview.
- If the preview is hidden, open the three-dot menu—horizontal dots on iOS or vertical dots on Android—and tap Lyrics to show or hide it.
Spotify says the preview control applies to tracks with available lyrics and is not available on music videos. The layout can differ on desktop, tablet, TV, car, or game-console apps, so the mobile path may not match those interfaces.
Why lyrics may be missing or limited
- The track has no available lyrics: Spotify says some songs do not have lyrics. Rights and catalog coverage can vary, and lyrics for a new release may not be available immediately.
- You are playing a music video: Spotify says lyrics previews are not available on music videos.
- Your device or market does not support the feature: Availability can vary by device and country.
- You selected another version of the song: Lyrics may be available for one recording or release but not another.
- The app or service is having a temporary problem: An outdated app, loading issue, or temporary service fault can interfere with display, though updating or restarting will not fix a licensing gap.
What to try when lyrics do not appear
- Check that you are playing an audio track, not a music video.
- Open Now Playing and look for the lyrics preview or panel.
- Try a familiar song. If lyrics appear there, the issue is likely specific to the original track or version.
- Update Spotify through your device’s app store, then restart the app.
- Test the same account on another supported device, if available.
- If lyrics are missing across many supported tracks and devices, contact Spotify support. If only a few songs are affected, a catalog or rights limitation is more likely than a need to subscribe.
What Premium adds to the lyrics experience
Premium is not generally required just to view online lyrics. The reported 2026 distinction is offline lyrics, alongside broader paid-plan features such as offline listening and ad-free playback. Spotify’s U.S. Premium page describes its plan benefits; availability and terms can vary by country.

If lyrics while streaming are all you want, try Free first. Consider Premium for offline lyrics or its other features, not simply to restore ordinary online lyrics.
