Spotify began rolling out Lossless to Premium subscribers on September 10, 2025, and said on October 6 that it was available in more than 50 markets. Its published maximum is up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, with availability dependent on an eligible plan, supported device, and playback path.
What the early Spotify app references showed
On June 19, 2025, 9to5Mac reported screenshots from Spicetify showing Lossless-related controls and labels in Spotify desktop builds. The references included a new “Lossless” quality option alongside Low, Normal, High, and Very High; FLAC; a maximum of 24-bit/44.1 kHz; and an estimate of up to 1 GB of data per hour. The report also described lossless labels in the Now Playing area and Spotify Connect-related screens. 9to5Mac’s June 2025 report captured a real development clue, not a formal product announcement.
The same report mentioned a separate “Enhance your headphones” reference, apparently associated with an internal codename. Its operation and compatibility were unclear, so it should not be treated as a confirmed Lossless feature.
Why the screenshots were not proof of an imminent release
Hidden interface strings and unfinished controls can show that software is being built or tested. They cannot establish when a feature will launch, where it will be available, which devices will support it, whether it will cost extra, or whether the final specification will match an early reference. In June 2025, the sound conclusion was that Spotify appeared to be preparing Lossless—not that a launch was days away.

What Spotify launched, and where it stands
Spotify announced on September 10, 2025, that Lossless was rolling out to Premium subscribers in selected markets. The company said on October 6 that it was available in more than 50 markets. The initial rollout named markets including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Sweden. Spotify described the rollout as gradual, so the market count does not mean every account, plan, or device is eligible. Spotify’s current U.S. Premium support page describes playback at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC across most of the catalog on mobile, desktop, tablet, and compatible Spotify Connect devices. It uses qualifications such as eligible Premium plan, supported hardware, and most of the catalog; Lossless is not guaranteed for every subscriber, track, or playback endpoint. The Premium benefits page does not establish web-player Lossless support.

What “up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC” means
FLAC is a lossless compression format: it reduces file size without discarding audio data from the encoded source. Spotify’s published ceiling is up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz in stereo. That is a lossless delivery format, but it is not the same as the 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz tiers offered by some services. “Lossless” is the more precise description of Spotify’s stated maximum than an unqualified claim of hi-res audio.
The format describes delivery, not the quality of every recording. Spotify’s artist documentation says higher-resolution supplied masters may be downsampled, with playback capped at 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. A label reading Lossless does not promise that the original recording was captured or mastered at the maximum specification. How to turn on Lossless
Spotify says Lossless settings must be enabled separately on each device. On mobile and tablet, choose whether to use it for Wi-Fi streaming, cellular streaming, or downloads; on desktop, choose it for streaming or downloads.
- On mobile or tablet: Open Spotify, tap your profile picture, select Settings and privacy, then Media quality. Set the relevant Wi-Fi, cellular, or download quality to Lossless.
- On desktop: Open Spotify, select your profile picture, go to Settings and privacy, then Media quality. Choose Lossless for streaming or downloads.
- For Spotify Connect: Connect to the target device, then check that device’s playback quality and the Connect Picker indicator. A setting changed on a phone does not by itself confirm lossless playback through a separate endpoint.
Spotify says listeners can see a Lossless indicator in Now Playing or the playback bar and through the Connect Picker when the playback path supports it. The Premium benefits guidance also describes separate quality choices for streaming and downloads; selecting Lossless for streaming does not automatically make downloaded tracks Lossless.

Which devices and connections can deliver it?
The complete playback chain matters. Wired headphones or speakers, a USB DAC, and compatible Spotify Connect equipment are the most practical ways to avoid Bluetooth’s extra compression step. Spotify says Bluetooth does not currently provide enough bandwidth to transmit its Lossless audio without compression. That does not mean all wireless playback is compressed: a supported network-based Spotify Connect device can stream wirelessly at up to 24-bit quality, according to Spotify’s launch guidance.
A Bluetooth connection may follow lossless source playback inside the app, but the Bluetooth transmission can compress the signal again. For users listening mostly on Bluetooth earbuds, the Lossless setting may therefore offer little practical advantage at the ear. A lossless toggle is not a guarantee of bit-perfect output from every receiver, DAC, or speaker.

Data use, buffering, and choosing a quality setting
The “up to 1 GB per hour” figure came from the early interface report, so treat it as an app-facing estimate, not a fixed usage rate or billing promise. Actual data varies with the music, buffering, connection, and whether it is streamed or downloaded. As a simple illustration, one hour at that estimate for ten hours would be about 10 GB—not a guaranteed total.
Spotify’s Lossless support guidance recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps connection for the best listening experience. Larger audio files can take longer to start or buffer, and a weak connection may cause playback glitches. If cellular data is limited, leave cellular quality lower and choose Lossless for Wi-Fi or downloads instead. Will you hear a difference?
Lossless preserves audio data rather than using lossy compression, but it is not a remaster, equalizer, or volume boost. A recording with a poor source or heavily clipped master will not be repaired by a higher-quality delivery format. Spotify says perceived results depend on the original recording, playback equipment, connection, and listener. Loudness normalization continues regardless of format, so Lossless does not inherently make playback louder. See Spotify’s lossless audio guidance.
Any audible difference can be subtle, and a noisy room, Bluetooth transmission, or less revealing speakers may matter more to the result than the format label. There is no reason to buy expensive equipment solely because the setting appears in Spotify; start with the gear and connection you already use.

- No Lossless option: Check that the account has an eligible Premium plan, that the feature is available for the account’s market, and that the app and device are supported. Spotify’s referenced support guidance lists mobile app version 9.0.58 or newer and desktop version 1.2.67 or newer; these are the versions on that support page, not permanent requirements.
- The indicator does not appear: Check the active playback endpoint, not just the phone or computer. With Spotify Connect, verify the target device supports Lossless and review its quality setting while connected.
- Playback stutters or buffers: Move to a stronger Wi-Fi connection or lower the quality. Spotify notes that some devices may lower quality automatically, while others require a manual change.
- A particular item will not play losslessly: Spotify lists music videos, podcasts, and audiobooks as unsupported. Music availability also depends on a qualifying source in the catalog.
- Offline playback remains at another quality: Set downloads to Lossless separately; the streaming selection does not change already downloaded files by assumption.
- Bluetooth listeners see no clear benefit: The wireless link can re-compress audio. Try a wired connection or a supported Spotify Connect device to assess the lossless path itself.
