Netflix does not currently document a universal sleep timer in its app. To stop a show after you fall asleep, use the sleep or power timer on your TV or streaming device, or a device-specific option on your phone or computer. Turning off Netflix’s Autoplay Next Episode can keep another episode from starting, but it will not stop the episode you are watching.
Does Netflix have a sleep timer?
Netflix’s official Help Center documents playback options such as Autoplay Next Episode and picture-in-picture, but it does not list a general in-app sleep timer. That means there is no universal Netflix countdown that reliably stops playback across phones, TVs, streaming devices, and browsers. Interfaces can differ by device and app version, so a specific rollout may vary; do not assume a timer is available unless you can see it in your Netflix app.
A sleep timer is different from several features people sometimes mistake for one:
- Autoplay Next Episode controls whether Netflix starts the next episode after the current one; it does not end current playback.
- “Are you still watching?” prompts are not a user-set countdown and are not a dependable way to schedule playback to stop.
- Picture-in-picture keeps a small Netflix video visible while you use other apps; it does not time out playback. Netflix lists support for Android 8.0 or later, iOS 14 or later, and iPadOS 14 or later, with device and plan restrictions. It is unavailable on iPhone and iPad when using an ad-supported Netflix experience. Netflix’s picture-in-picture requirements have details.
- A TV, streaming-device, or phone timer is a system control, not a Netflix setting. It may power off a screen or put a device to sleep without cleanly pausing Netflix.
Turn off Autoplay Next Episode
This reduces the chance that a new episode will start after the current one. Netflix says the preference is profile-specific; if the change does not take effect, refresh the device, switch profiles, or sign out and back in.

In the Netflix mobile app
- Open Netflix and select the profile you want to change.
- Tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner, then tap the profile name at the top.
- Tap Manage Profiles and select the profile.
- Turn Autoplay Next Episode off. On iPhone or iPad, tap Done if it appears.
In a web browser
- Open your Netflix account page and select Profiles.
- Choose the profile, then open Playback settings.
- Turn Autoplay Next Episode off.
Netflix’s autoplay instructions cover both routes. This is a useful backup, not a timer: a film or the current episode can continue to its end.
Set a sleep timer on Roku TV
Roku TV has a system-level sleep timer that can turn off the television after a set interval while streaming internet content, including Netflix. It belongs to the TV, not the Netflix app.

- Start playing Netflix.
- Press the Left button on the Roku remote to open the side menu or options panel.
- Choose Sleep timer, if that option is available, and select an interval.
- Leave playback running. The Roku TV should turn off when the timer expires.
Roku also describes supported voice-remote and Roku mobile app controls. The exact menus depend on model and software. A Roku streaming stick or box connected to a non-Roku TV may not provide the same TV sleep control; check the television’s own timer instead. Roku’s sleep-timer guidance explains supported behavior. When the TV wakes, Netflix may resume or reload depending on the device.
Set a sleep timer on Apple TV
Apple TV’s sleep timer is a power control for the streaming device, not a Netflix playback countdown.

- Play Netflix.
- Press and hold the TV button on the Apple TV remote to open Control Center.
- Select Power Off or the available sleep-timer control.
- If a one-time timer duration is offered, choose it and confirm.
Apple documents a one-time sleep timer and Control Center power controls, though labels can vary by tvOS version. The Apple TV may enter sleep rather than merely pause Netflix. Whether the connected television also turns off can depend on HDMI-CEC settings. See Apple’s Apple TV power-control guide.
Use your smart TV’s sleep timer
If you run Netflix directly on a smart TV, the TV’s own sleep timer is often the simplest system-level option. Manufacturers and models use different menus, so there is no single reliable path.

- Start Netflix playback.
- Press the TV remote’s Settings, Menu, Home, or Options button.
- Look in Quick Settings, Power, System Settings, Timers, General or Device Preferences, or Energy Saving.
- Choose Sleep Timer, Sleep, Auto Power Off, Power Timer, or Turn off after, then select an interval.
- Return to Netflix. If you cannot find the option, check the manual for your exact TV model.
A TV timer usually changes the television’s power state; it is not necessarily a command to close Netflix. Screensavers are different: they may protect against a static image but do not necessarily stop playback or turn off the TV.

There is no universal mobile timer path that guarantees Netflix will stop. A screen timeout or lock may pause video on one device, while another may leave audio playing or keep the app active. Behavior can vary by operating-system version, manufacturer, and Netflix app.

- Use your device’s screen timeout or lock behavior, then test whether Netflix pauses on your specific device.
- Consider an operating-system screen-time or app-limit feature if it offers a suitable limit, but verify its effect on active playback.
- On iPhone or iPad, test any timer or automation while awake on your installed iOS or iPadOS version; do not rely on it until you have confirmed whether it pauses playback.
- On Android, test with the screen locked. Some device and app combinations may continue audio even when the display is off.
If battery use is your concern, lower the brightness and disable wireless features you do not need. Keeping a device plugged in can avoid battery drain, but do not charge it under bedding, where heat can build up.
Stop Netflix on a Windows PC or Mac
On a computer, combine Netflix’s autoplay setting with the operating system’s sleep settings. A display turning off by itself does not always stop browser playback.
- Disable Autoplay Next Episode in Netflix Playback settings using the browser steps above.
- Set the computer to sleep after a chosen period if you want the system itself to stop running. Check that the setting applies while video is playing.
- A browser extension or automation may offer a countdown that pauses a tab or media, but it is third-party software. Review its publisher, permissions, privacy policy, and compatibility before installing it. Extensions can access page or browsing data, and Netflix interface changes can break them.
Do not assume a specific extension is safe or compatible without checking its current listing and permissions.
Choose a method for your setup

Choose based on what you want to stop. A TV timer is suited to switching off the screen and saving power; a streaming-device timer may sleep only the player; a phone lock may leave audio running. An external smart plug can cut power, but it is a blunt alternative that may affect other connected equipment rather than cleanly pausing Netflix.

If Netflix keeps playing after the timer
- Identify which device is actually playing Netflix: the TV, a streaming box, a phone, or a computer.
- Confirm the timer was set on that device or on the television itself, not merely in a remote-control app.
- Check that the timer was saved and did not reset when you changed inputs.
- Check whether a soundbar, receiver, or HDMI-CEC connection remains active after the screen or player sleeps.
- Turn off Autoplay Next Episode for the profile in use.
- Update Netflix and the device software, then restart the device.
- While awake, test the setup with a short interval, such as 5 or 10 minutes, and observe whether playback pauses, the player sleeps, or the TV powers off.
- If playback is unresponsive or autoplay is not behaving as expected, follow Netflix’s guidance for frozen or unresponsive devices or autoplay problems.
