Spotify Lossless Is Here: What the 2025 Reports Got Right—and What You Need to Use It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Spotify’s high-quality audio is no longer a rumor. The company began rolling out Lossless to eligible Premium subscribers on September 10, 2025, and said it had reached more than 50 markets by October 6. The feature is included with eligible Premium plans rather than requiring the separately reported “Music Pro” tier. Spotify Lossless uses FLAC at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz; Bluetooth headphones can play it, but cannot preserve a lossless signal end to end.

The current answer at a glance

Question Current answer
Is Spotify’s lossless audio available? Yes. It began rolling out on September 10, 2025, with availability dependent on market, plan, app and device support.
What is it called? Spotify Lossless, not Spotify HiFi.
What quality does it provide? FLAC up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz.
Does it cost extra? No separate lossless surcharge is shown on Spotify’s current U.S. Premium page.
Does Bluetooth stay lossless? No. Spotify says Bluetooth compresses the signal before transmission.

Spotify’s Lossless page and support documentation describe the feature as available to eligible Premium listeners on supported devices. Free listeners receive a compressed version instead.

Why older headlines mentioned Spotify HiFi and Music Pro

Spotify HiFi was the 2021 promise

On February 22, 2021, Spotify announced Spotify HiFi, promising a CD-quality lossless experience for Premium subscribers. That announcement did not give a firm public launch date, so “Spotify HiFi” remained a name for a planned product rather than the name of the service that eventually shipped.

Music Pro was reported, not launched

Later reporting described a possible “Music Pro” add-on that might have cost as much as $5.99 more per month and combined higher-quality audio with fan features. Music Business Worldwide characterized that as a reported proposal. Spotify did not require readers to buy that reported tier for the Lossless rollout, and there is no first-party announcement establishing that Music Pro launched or was canceled.

What Spotify actually launched

Spotify announced the first Lossless rollout on September 10, 2025, naming Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, the United States and the United Kingdom among the initial markets. Spotify later said availability had expanded to more than 50 markets by October 6, 2025. In August 2026, the feature is live, but a particular account can still depend on country, Premium eligibility, app version and playback device.

The service supports mobile, desktop and tablet apps plus supported Spotify Connect hardware. Spotify initially identified devices from Sony, Bose, Samsung and Sennheiser, with Sonos and Amazon support expected to follow in October 2025. Do not assume that every television, car system, game console, wearable or third-party speaker accepts the uncompressed stream.

Quality: lossless, but not 24-bit/192 kHz

Spotify’s technical ceiling

Spotify Lossless uses FLAC and reaches up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz, according to Spotify’s current Connect documentation. That is a 44.1 kHz sample rate with greater bit depth than standard CD’s 16-bit/44.1 kHz, but it is not the 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz maximum marketed by some rival services.

What “lossless” means

Spotify’s lossless-audio explanation says the format preserves data from the source master instead of discarding some information to reduce file size. “Nearly every song” is covered, not literally every track, version or master. Older quality choices—Low, Normal, High and Very High—remain available.

  • Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
  • 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
  • Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
  • Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.

Lossless changes fidelity, not loudness. Spotify says loudness normalization still applies regardless of format, so a louder stream should not be treated as proof that it sounds better.

Does Lossless cost more?

Spotify’s current U.S. Premium page lists Lossless as a Premium feature. The page shows an Individual plan at $12.99 per month after the promotional offer, Duo at $18.99 and Family at $21.99; Student is listed at $6.99 after its trial, subject to eligibility. Those figures are U.S.-specific and promotional terms and prices can change. Other countries, plan types and billing arrangements may differ.

The accurate claim is that no separate Lossless fee is currently shown for U.S. Premium—not that lossless listening is free or that every market uses identical pricing.

How to turn on Spotify Lossless

  1. Open Spotify and tap your profile icon in the upper-left corner.
  2. Choose Settings & Privacy.
  3. Open Media Quality.
  4. Choose Lossless separately for Wi-Fi streaming, cellular streaming and downloads.
  5. Start playback and look for the Lossless indicator in Now Playing or the playback bar.

Spotify Connect can also let you change quality after selecting a connected device. The setting is device-specific, so enabling it on a phone does not automatically enable it on a desktop, tablet or another Connect endpoint.

What equipment can actually use it?

The required chain

  • An eligible Premium account in a supported market.
  • A current Spotify app or supported Spotify Connect device.
  • A playback path capable of receiving the uncompressed stream.

Wired headphones, powered speakers connected through a suitable DAC, a USB audio interface and supported Spotify Connect streamers are the clearest ways to keep the signal lossless after it leaves Spotify.

Bluetooth is convenient, not bit-perfect

Spotify’s launch guidance says Bluetooth does not have enough bandwidth to transmit its lossless stream without compression. A phone may decode a FLAC file, but Bluetooth earbuds then receive a compressed wireless transmission. That does not make Bluetooth sound bad; it means the final link is not lossless. Do not buy expensive wireless headphones solely to unlock Spotify Lossless.

Windows Exclusive Mode

In March 2026, Tom’s Guide reported a Windows desktop Exclusive Mode intended to bypass system resampling, mixing and volume processing for playback up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz with an external DAC or audio interface. The reported path is Settings → Playback → Audio Output → select the device → Exclusive mode. Treat this as Windows- and version-specific: the report said Mac support was not yet available, and the feature should not be generalized to mobile, consoles or every desktop build.

Data, storage and loading trade-offs

Lossless files are larger. Spotify warns that playback can take longer to begin while a larger file loads or caches, and its settings show estimated data requirements by quality level. Exact consumption varies with track, listening time, format and app behavior.

  • Cellular Lossless uses more mobile data.
  • Lossless offline downloads consume more storage.
  • Weak connections can produce longer buffering or startup delays.
  • Heavier transfers may affect battery life.
  • Wi-Fi is the sensible default for streaming and downloads.

Because Wi-Fi, cellular and downloads are separate controls, a practical compromise is Lossless on Wi-Fi and Very High (or lower) for cellular and offline files when data or storage is limited.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Will every song sound better?

No. Lossless preserves more information; it cannot repair a poor recording, clipping, bad mastering or an inferior source. Audible differences depend on the master, equipment, room or surroundings, hearing and volume matching. Many listeners will not hear a dramatic change between Very High and Lossless through Bluetooth, inexpensive speakers or a noisy commute.

For a fair comparison, use the same track and master, wired playback where possible, and closely matched volume. Spotify’s normalization means louder playback is not a reliable indicator of higher quality.

Who should enable it?

Good candidates

  • Premium users with wired headphones, a USB DAC, powered speakers or a supported lossless Connect device.
  • Listeners with generous Wi-Fi bandwidth and offline storage.
  • People who want to stay with Spotify’s playlists, discovery and social features while trying lossless audio.

Who should probably leave it off

  • Listeners who use Bluetooth almost exclusively.
  • People with tight cellular-data limits or little device storage.
  • Anyone expecting 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz files.
  • Free-tier users, who receive compressed playback.

Spotify versus services aimed at hi-res listeners

Spotify’s advantage is its discovery system, playlists, social tools and broad device ecosystem. The trade-off is a maximum of 24-bit/44.1 kHz. Music Business Worldwide reported that Apple Music and Amazon Music support higher maximum resolutions; Apple Music, TIDAL, Qobuz and Amazon Music Unlimited may therefore appeal more to listeners specifically seeking higher-resolution catalogs. Verify current plans, prices, catalog coverage and device support before switching, because those details vary by country and change over time.

If the Lossless option is missing or playback is slow

The setting is unavailable

  1. Update the Spotify app.
  2. Confirm the account, country and Premium plan.
  3. Check Settings & Privacy → Media Quality.
  4. Enable Lossless independently for Wi-Fi, cellular and downloads.
  5. Test the official mobile, desktop or tablet app.
  6. If using Connect, verify that the target device supports Lossless.
  7. Check for the Lossless indicator during playback.

The label appears, but the connection is not lossless

The indicator reflects Spotify’s selected playback quality; it does not make a downstream Bluetooth link uncompressed. Use a wired or supported non-Bluetooth connection when bit-perfect transmission matters.

Tracks start slowly or downloads fill storage

Use Wi-Fi, let downloads finish before leaving home, and reserve Lossless downloads for music you genuinely need at maximum quality. Very High is often the better travel compromise.

The Bottom Line

The 2025 reports were directionally right but commercially off-target: Spotify’s promised high-quality audio arrived as Lossless on September 10, 2025, inside eligible Premium plans rather than as a clearly separate HiFi subscription. It reaches 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, works best over wired or supported Connect hardware, and is worth trying if your equipment and data plan can use it—just do not confuse it with 24-bit/192 kHz hi-res audio or expect Bluetooth to remain lossless.
