Yes, Spotify Lossless is real. The rollout began on September 10, 2025, and Spotify said it had reached Premium listeners in more than 50 markets by October 6. But “lossless tier” is inaccurate: Lossless is a playback option included with eligible Premium plans, not a separately priced subscription. Spotify’s listed ceiling is up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz, and ordinary Bluetooth playback usually prevents an end-to-end lossless connection.
What Spotify actually launched
Spotify added Lossless as a quality setting in its apps and on supported connected hardware. It applies to music playback; Spotify says music videos, podcasts and audiobooks are not available in Lossless.
The U.S. was among the initial markets in the 2025 rollout. Access can still vary by country, account, plan, app version and playback device, so the feature should be treated as an eligible-Premium capability rather than a guarantee for every account.
The delay matters because Spotify announced a future high-fidelity product in 2021. The product that eventually shipped is called Lossless, and the launch should not be read as proof that every feature associated with the original HiFi announcement arrived unchanged. Price and plan availability
Lossless does not require a new add-on. Spotify’s U.S. Premium page currently shows Premium Individual at $12.99 per month after the displayed promotional offer, with Lossless included. Promotional pricing, eligibility and the terms of Individual, Student and Family plans can change, so confirm the checkout total for your country before subscribing.

What “lossless” means here
Spotify lists a maximum of 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. That preserves the data in the delivered source file without the data-discarding compression used by lossy formats. The 44.1 kHz sample rate is the CD-quality rate; 24-bit describes greater digital depth. This is not the same as a service whose headline formats are 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz.

Lossless cannot create detail that is absent from the original recording or master. Spotify identifies the source recording, device and playback route as factors in what you hear. It also keeps loudness normalization available regardless of format, so Lossless does not automatically make a track louder. Match volume when comparing formats.

How to turn Lossless on
- Open Spotify and tap the profile icon in the top-left.
- Choose Settings & Privacy.
- Open Media Quality.
- Set Lossless separately for Wi-Fi, Cellular and Downloads, as appropriate.
Spotify says a Lossless label appears in the Now Playing view or playback bar when the active route is using that quality. You can also check the Connect Picker.

When using Spotify Connect
- Start playback.
- Open the device picker or Connect menu.
- Select the connected device.
- Open its quality settings or File Quality card.
- Select Lossless.
A phone’s general setting does not guarantee that a connected speaker or receiver is receiving Lossless. The device itself must support it and may need a firmware update. Use Spotify’s Lossless device directory to check a model.
App, network and hardware requirements
App versions
Spotify’s support page lists mobile app version 9.0.58 or later and desktop version 1.2.67 or later. If the setting is missing, update the app first. Some third-party products also require current firmware.

Bluetooth is usually not lossless end to end
Spotify says Bluetooth does not currently provide enough bandwidth to carry its lossless signal intact in the ordinary playback chain. Your phone or computer can receive a Lossless stream, but the Bluetooth transmission to typical headphones or speakers generally introduces another lossy step. A newer Bluetooth codec or premium headset is not automatically an exception; the entire source, codec, receiver and app chain must support lossless transmission.

For the best chance of preserving the path, Spotify recommends wired headphones or speakers, Spotify Connect, or another non-Bluetooth connection to compatible equipment.
Connection and storage
Spotify recommends a steady connection of approximately 1.5–2 Mbps for Lossless listening. The larger files can consume more cellular data, occupy more storage when downloaded, take longer to cache and expose weak Wi-Fi to more buffering. Stream Lossless over reliable Wi-Fi, download it there for offline use, or select a lower cellular quality when your data plan or connection requires it.

There is no universal answer. The audible result depends on the connection, headphones or speakers, any DAC or receiver in the chain, the recording and master, matched listening levels, and your own hearing and preference. Wired or properly supported network playback gives Lossless a genuine technical path; Bluetooth normally does not.

A compatible device may support Lossless without supporting Spotify’s full ceiling. Spotify’s Connect directory distinguishes products capable of 16-bit and 24-bit Lossless. Conversely, a high-resolution system cannot improve a recording whose source is limited or heavily mastered.

Fixes for common problems
The Lossless option is missing
- Update Spotify to the listed mobile or desktop version.
- Confirm that the account has an eligible Premium plan and that Lossless is available in your market.
- Test playback directly on the phone or computer.
- Reconnect through Spotify Connect and update the third-party device’s firmware.
- Check the specific product in Spotify’s Lossless directory.
Playback buffers
- Move to stable Wi-Fi.
- Use lower quality on cellular data.
- Download albums over Wi-Fi for offline playback.
- Reduce quality manually if the connection cannot sustain the larger stream.
Lossless is enabled but sounds unchanged
- Check whether Bluetooth is compressing the final link.
- Try wired or supported Connect playback.
- Compare at matched volume with loudness normalization understood.
- Remember that the master and your equipment may limit the audible difference.
Verdict
For a current Spotify subscriber with wired headphones, a compatible DAC or a Lossless-capable Connect device, this is a useful Premium upgrade at no separate Lossless fee. It is not a reason for every listener to buy new hardware: Bluetooth users may not get end-to-end Lossless, some recordings will reveal little change, and Spotify’s 24-bit/44.1 kHz ceiling is below the higher sample rates offered elsewhere. Keep Spotify for its ecosystem and discovery, or compare alternatives if higher-resolution or Spatial Audio formats matter more than preserving your existing library.
