Spotify Lossless is real. Spotify began rolling it out to eligible Premium listeners on September 10, 2025, and said it had reached more than 50 markets by October 6, including the United States. It is not a separate “Spotify HiFi” subscription: Lossless is presented as a feature of eligible Premium plans. Spotify’s U.S. Premium page advertises playback of up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz—but your plan, country, device, connection method, and the track itself all determine whether you actually receive it.
What Spotify actually launched
Spotify’s original 2021 HiFi announcement promised CD-quality lossless audio for Premium subscribers. The feature did not arrive on that timetable, and “Spotify HiFi” remained a long-running promise rather than a product customers could use.
That changed on September 10, 2025, when Spotify announced the rollout of a feature called Lossless. The company initially listed Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, the United States, and the United Kingdom among the first markets. Spotify later said Lossless was available in more than 50 markets. Its 2025 annual filing still described the feature as available in select markets, so it should not be treated as universally available worldwide.

The practical answer is therefore more precise than “Spotify HiFi has launched”: Spotify now offers lossless streaming in supported markets to listeners on eligible Premium plans, but access is not guaranteed for every account, paid plan, song, or playback device.

Which Spotify subscribers are eligible?
Spotify’s support documentation uses the phrase eligible Premium plan. That can include Premium Individual, Duo, Family, or Student accounts where the feature is offered, but Spotify does not state that every paid or market-specific plan automatically qualifies.
Basic plans, promotional subscriptions, bundled offers, and other regional products may have different eligibility rules. Free, ad-supported accounts should not be expected to receive Lossless. If you are unsure, the most reliable test is to open your own Spotify account and check whether Lossless appears under Settings → Media Quality.
Country availability and account eligibility are separate questions. A feature can be available in your country while still being unavailable to a particular plan or account.

Spotify’s current U.S. Premium page advertises lossless music at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz. That is lossless quality at the standard CD sampling frequency with additional bit-depth capability. It is not the same as offering unlimited 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz hi-res playback.
Spotify describes lossless as preserving the data from the original recording and identifies FLAC as its preferred lossless delivery format for uploaded music. However, “lossless” does not mean louder, more dynamic, or automatically better mastered. Loudness normalization can still be applied regardless of format, according to Spotify’s support documentation.

A lossless file cannot repair a poor master, change an album’s production decisions, or overcome weak headphones and noisy surroundings. It preserves more of the source signal; it does not guarantee a dramatic audible improvement.
How to turn on Spotify Lossless
- Open Spotify on your phone, tablet, or computer.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Media Quality.
- Select Lossless for the relevant streaming-quality setting.
- If you want lossless offline listening, change the download-quality setting separately.
- Start playback and look for the Lossless label in the player.
Menu placement can vary by operating system, app build, account, and device. Update Spotify and restart the app if the option is missing, but do not assume that changing streaming quality also changes download quality.

When using Spotify Connect, connect to the target speaker, receiver, or streamer, then tap the connected device and inspect its file-quality information. Spotify’s Connect instructions indicate that some destinations require Lossless to be enabled separately. The in-player label is more useful than the setting alone: it indicates when Spotify is delivering the highest available quality on that playback path.
The equipment and connection test
For end-to-end lossless playback, check each link in the chain:
- An eligible Premium account in a supported market
- An up-to-date Spotify app
- Lossless enabled for streaming or downloads
- A track with an available lossless version
- A compatible phone, computer, tablet, speaker, receiver, or Spotify Connect device
- A connection path that does not unnecessarily re-encode the audio
- A steady internet connection
- A visible Lossless indicator during playback
Spotify names Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser among device ecosystems with supported hardware, but compatibility remains model-specific. A brand name alone is not proof that every product in that range supports Lossless.

Wired headphones or speakers connected through a capable digital or analog path are the simplest way to avoid wireless-codec uncertainty. But wired does not automatically mean lossless: the phone, computer, USB adapter, DAC, receiver, or operating system may still resample or process the signal.
Important: Spotify Lossless is not necessarily lossless over Bluetooth
Lossless in the Spotify app does not guarantee lossless sound over Bluetooth.
Your phone may receive a lossless stream and then encode it again for the Bluetooth connection. The result depends on the source device, operating system, Bluetooth codec, and receiving headphones or speaker. Spotify itself warns that Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, AUX, and other connection methods can affect the quality actually supported.
For a meaningful lossless test, use a wired connection or a known-compatible network playback device and confirm the status indicator. Ordinary Bluetooth earbuds can still sound excellent, but “Bluetooth works with Spotify” is not equivalent to “Bluetooth delivers Spotify Lossless.”
Internet use, downloads, and individual tracks
Spotify recommends a steady connection of approximately 1.5–2 Mbps for the best lossless listening experience. Lossless also uses more data than compressed streaming, so cellular listeners should monitor their data allowance.

Unstable Wi-Fi or insufficient bandwidth can interrupt playback or cause Spotify to select a lower-quality format. Downloads can be useful for travel, but you must select Lossless for downloads and allow substantially more storage. Spotify Connect can show an estimated data use per hour on its device screen; use that in-app estimate rather than relying on a universal figure.
Not every song is guaranteed to play losslessly. The account must qualify, the track must have a lossless version, and the destination and connection must support it. Spotify says it automatically selects the best available format for the listener’s plan and hardware. A Lossless setting by itself does not prove that the current song and output path are lossless.
Can you actually hear the difference?
Sometimes—but there is no honest universal answer.
The audible result depends on your headphones or speakers, amplifier, DAC, source device, listening environment, hearing, listening experience, mastering, and volume. The difference between Spotify’s previous high-quality compressed stream and lossless may be subtle for one listener and more apparent for another. A change in mastering, EQ, distortion, or speaker quality can matter more than the change in file format.
For a fair comparison, use the same master, the same equipment, and level-matched volume. Background noise and small volume differences can strongly influence impressions. If Lossless sounds no different, that is not necessarily a fault: you may already have been satisfied with Spotify’s high-bitrate mode, or your playback chain may be the limiting factor.

Spotify versus Apple Music, TIDAL, and Qobuz

These services are not interchangeable on technical grounds alone. Apple Music may be more compelling for spatial audio and Apple hardware. TIDAL or Qobuz may suit listeners specifically seeking higher-resolution catalogs. Spotify’s advantage is that lossless now arrives alongside the recommendation, playlist, sharing, and Connect features that persuaded many subscribers to stay.
Pricing is regional and changes over time. On the U.S. Premium page captured for this article, Spotify listed Individual at $12.99 per month, Student at $6.99, Duo at $18.99, and Family at $21.99. Promotional prices are temporary, and Spotify announced a pricing update in January 2026. TIDAL’s pricing changed effective August 3, 2026, so older comparison tables should not be used without checking the current regional plan page.
Who should choose Spotify Lossless?
- Stay with Spotify if you already rely on its playlists, recommendations, DJ, Jam, social listening, or Connect devices and have compatible wired or network playback hardware.
- Try it before buying equipment if you are curious about lossless. A capable wired headphone, modern phone or computer, and clean digital connection may be enough; an expensive DAC is not automatically required.
- Compare Apple Music if you use Apple devices heavily or specifically want spatial audio.
- Compare TIDAL or Qobuz if 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz availability and an audiophile-first catalog matter more than Spotify’s discovery tools.
- Do not expect a major transformation if your main listening is through ordinary Bluetooth earbuds. The wireless link may prevent lossless end-to-end playback, and the audible change may be modest.
Common problems and fixes
The Lossless option is missing
Check your country, account plan, and app version. Confirm that you are looking under Media Quality on the device you actually use. Test mobile or desktop before diagnosing a third-party speaker. With Spotify Connect, check the destination separately. Avoid using a VPN or region-switching workaround as a substitute for confirmed eligibility.

Look for the in-player Lossless label. If it is absent, test a wired connection or a known-supported Connect device. Possible causes include Bluetooth encoding, an unsupported receiver, operating-system mixing, DAC or adapter limitations, network instability, or a track without a lossless version.
Lossless sounds identical
That can be normal. Use a level-matched comparison with the same master and a quiet environment. If there is still no clear difference, keep the service that offers the better catalog and listening experience rather than buying hardware solely to chase a specification.
Verdict
Spotify did finally deliver the lossless feature its 2021 HiFi announcement promised, but the current product is narrower and more qualified than the headline suggests. It launched in 2025, is tied to eligible Premium access, reaches up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz according to Spotify’s U.S. plan page, and depends on the entire playback chain.
For existing Spotify subscribers with compatible wired or Spotify Connect hardware, Lossless is a valuable upgrade at no separately named HiFi tier. For listeners seeking the highest-resolution catalogs or spatial audio, Apple Music, TIDAL, or Qobuz may still be a better fit. The right choice depends less on the word “lossless” than on the service, equipment, and listening habits you actually use.
