Spotify Premium’s included audiobook time is limited, and Spotify’s Audiobooks+ add-on lets eligible subscribers buy more listening time each month. In the U.S., the add-on launched on August 5, 2025, with 15 extra hours per month. The last widely reported U.S. launch price was $11.99 per month, while a 10-hour one-time top-up was reported at $12.99. Spotify’s current support pages do not publish a universal price table, so check the price shown in your own account before subscribing.
The short version
- Eligible Spotify Premium users receive 15 included audiobook hours per month in the U.S.
- Audiobooks+ adds another monthly allowance, but it is a recurring paid add-on—not a free increase to the standard Premium benefit.
- Included hours and Audiobooks+ hours reset monthly; unused time does not roll over.
- One-time top-ups are available after the monthly allowances run out and are valid for 12 months from purchase.
- On Duo and Family plans, the included audiobook allowance belongs to the plan manager. Other members need a manager-purchased add-on or top-up.
Spotify describes its audiobook system in terms of listening time rather than the permanent ownership or monthly-credit model associated with services such as Audible.
What Spotify Premium already includes
Spotify’s current U.S. Premium information lists 15 audiobook hours per month for Premium Individual subscribers and for the managers of Premium Duo and Premium Family plans. The allowance is separate from music and podcast listening.
Duo and Family members do not automatically receive their own 15-hour allowance. Premium Student users should not assume they qualify: Spotify’s U.S. support documentation currently says Student is not eligible for audiobook listening time.

Spotify’s U.S. page currently shows these base-plan prices after promotional periods, although prices and offers can change:

What Audiobooks+ adds
Audiobooks+ is a recurring add-on that supplies additional audiobook hours every month. The U.S. rollout began August 5, 2025, after Spotify announced the expansion in July.
The launch product supplied 15 extra hours monthly. Spotify’s May 2026 Investor Day announcement said the company would expand Audiobooks+ with higher-hour tiers for heavy listeners, with Family and Student Audiobooks+ plans also planned later in 2026. Spotify did not identify the final tier names, prices, or exact hour allocations in that announcement, so those details should be verified in the reader’s market and account rather than assumed.

Spotify said Audiobooks+ had reached 1 million subscribers and was on track for $100 million in annualized recurring revenue. Those are company-reported figures and should not be treated as independently audited measurements.
How much does it cost?
Reported U.S. launch pricing: $11.99 per month for Audiobooks+ and $12.99 for a one-time 10-hour top-up.
Important qualification: Spotify says pricing can vary by market, and its current support pages do not display a universal U.S. price table. Treat those figures as reported launch prices, not a guaranteed September 2026 checkout price.
To see the price Spotify is offering you:
- Open Spotify while logged in.
- On mobile, tap your profile picture, choose Your Premium, tap Manage, then choose Browse add-ons.
- On the web, open Spotify’s Audiobook listening time or available subscriptions area and select Add-ons.
- Review the displayed price, billing date, and eligibility before confirming.
Adding an add-on can move the billing date forward and create a prorated adjustment. If the underlying Premium subscription ends, access to the add-on ends as well.

Fifteen hours does not mean 15 hours of real-time playback
Spotify calculates audiobook consumption using the book’s duration at normal speed. Increasing playback speed does not preserve the allowance. A five-hour audiobook played at 2× may take only two and a half hours of real time, but Spotify still deducts five hours from the allocation.
Re-listening also consumes time again. Separately purchased or unlocked audiobooks do not count against the included listening allocation.
Hours expire
Included monthly hours and Audiobooks+ hours reset at the beginning of the next billing period. Unused time does not roll over, and Spotify says it does not refund unused or expired included listening time.
That makes Audiobooks+ a poor deal for someone who listens sporadically. Paying for 15 additional hours is easiest to justify when you regularly use most of them before the reset.

How Duo and Family plans work
The manager-member distinction is the most important catch for shared plans:
- The plan manager receives the included audiobook hours.
- Other members cannot use the manager’s unused hours.
- A member must request access from the manager.
- The manager can purchase Audiobooks+ for Plan Members or a top-up for a member.
- If a member leaves the plan, access to purchased add-ons or top-ups may be lost until they rejoin an eligible plan.
Spotify also notes that Google Play Billing users can purchase Audiobooks+ for only one plan member. Free trials, Student or Basic plans, non-recurring payment methods, stacked prepaid time, and some third-party billing arrangements may also prevent add-ons.

To buy a top-up, open Spotify’s Audiobook listening time page, find Top-ups, select Top up, and complete payment.
How to check your remaining time
On mobile, tap your profile picture, open Settings and privacy, select the current plan, and choose Track your included hours and top ups. On desktop, open Spotify’s Audiobook Listening Time page.
Tracking can be delayed when playback is paused mid-chapter or when a device remains offline for an extended period, so the displayed balance may not update immediately.
Is Audiobooks+ worth it?
It makes sense if you:
- Already pay for Spotify Premium.
- Regularly use nearly all of the included hours.
- Listen to several books rather than wanting permanent ownership of one title.
- Prefer keeping music, podcasts, and audiobooks in one app.
- Want a recurring allowance instead of making separate purchases.
A top-up is better if you:
- Usually stay within the included allowance.
- Only occasionally need a few more hours.
- Are close to finishing a book before the billing reset.
- Do not want another recurring charge.
Spotify may be a poor fit if you:
- Want to permanently own every audiobook.
- Frequently listen to books longer than the monthly allowance.
- Dislike paying for time that expires.
- Prefer titles missing from Spotify’s subscriber catalog.
- Are on a Student plan or a billing arrangement that does not support add-ons.
Spotify is not the same as Audible
Spotify primarily offers time-based access to a subscriber catalog. That is different from an ownership- or credit-oriented service, where a purchased audiobook generally remains available under the provider’s rules.
Spotify can be useful for sampling multiple books, especially for people who already use Premium. It is less compelling for listeners who want to keep titles permanently or who routinely exceed the monthly time limit. Catalog rights vary by country and can change, and books available in Spotify’s subscriber catalog may differ from titles available for separate purchase.
Alternatives serve different needs:
- Audible is more suited to readers who prioritize credits or keeping purchased titles.
- Libby offers library borrowing through participating libraries, although holds, loan periods, and catalog availability vary.
- Chirp focuses on discounted individual audiobook purchases rather than a monthly listening allowance.
- Libro.fm uses a purchase-oriented model and emphasizes support for independent bookstores.
The practical verdict
Spotify Audiobooks+ is best understood as a convenience layer for Premium subscribers who regularly run out of audiobook time—not as a free upgrade and not as a replacement for audiobook ownership. Use the included hours first. Choose a top-up for an occasional overrun, and choose Audiobooks+ only when the monthly extra time is something you will consistently use. If you want permanent access, unlimited listening, or library borrowing, compare Spotify with an ownership-based service or Libby before adding another recurring bill.
