Spotify’s “new weekly discovery feature for genres” is a set of genre controls for Discover Weekly, not a separate playlist. Eligible listeners can choose up to five options Spotify recommends based on their listening history, shaping a fresh 30-track playlist. Spotify introduced the controls in June 2025 for Premium users; its January 2026 guidance still described them as a Premium feature, and its public materials do not establish a complete worldwide rollout to Free accounts.
What Spotify changed
Discover Weekly is Spotify’s personalized playlist that refreshes every Monday. The genre controls add a way to steer its recommendations: rather than relying only on listening signals, eligible listeners can select from genre options Spotify associates with their history. Spotify announced the upgrade on June 30, 2025, for Discover Weekly’s 10th anniversary, describing the result as a fresh 30-track playlist influenced by those choices and the listener’s taste (Spotify’s announcement).

The playlist itself is still Discover Weekly, which Spotify launched in 2015. The change is an added preference signal, not a new product called “Weekly Discovery” and not a promise that recommendations will obey a strict genre boundary.
How to find and use the genre controls
- Open Discover Weekly. In Spotify, go to Home and look for the Made For You hub, or search for “Discover Weekly.” Spotify’s support page lists both approaches for finding personalized playlists: Find playlists.
- Check the top of the playlist. Spotify says the genre controls are at the top of Discover Weekly. Labels and placement may vary by platform or interface version; Spotify has not published a universal app-version requirement or exact screen path for every device.
- Choose from the options shown. You can select up to five genres, but the options are personalized from your streaming history rather than an unrestricted list of every genre Spotify carries.
- Listen, then save what you want to keep. Discover Weekly refreshes on Monday, so save individual tracks or add them to a personal playlist if you want to return to them later. Spotify describes the controls as shaping recommendations; it does not promise that every selection instantly replaces the full playlist with a wholly different set of songs.
Who can use it?
Spotify’s June 2025 announcement identified Premium users as the initial audience and said it planned to bring the feature to more listeners. Spotify’s January 28, 2026 overview still described the genre controls as a Premium feature (Spotify’s discovery-features overview). Those public statements do not establish a complete country-by-country rollout or confirm that every Free account now has access. If the controls matter to you, check whether they appear on your own account rather than assuming they are available in every market or tier.

Spotify’s support page covers Discover Weekly, Spotify Mixes, and Release Radar (Spotify Support). Spotify’s discussion of its recommendation products also distinguishes Discover Weekly from Release Radar and other discovery experiences (Spotify on its discovery products). The practical distinction: Discover Weekly is a Monday discovery playlist, Release Radar is Friday-oriented and release-focused, and Mixes are a separate set of personalized playlists. Genre controls do not turn Discover Weekly into a new-release calendar.
What genre selection does—and does not—guarantee
The selections guide Spotify’s personalization; they are not a manual playlist builder or a filter that excludes everything outside a chosen genre. Genre labels can overlap, and recommendations may cross styles or include familiar artists. Spotify’s January 2026 description presents Discover Weekly as a way to find new favorites and deeper cuts from artists listeners already love, so “discovery” does not necessarily mean every song or artist will be unfamiliar (Spotify’s overview).

- You may not see the genre you want. Spotify says the options are personalized from listening history. It is reasonable to expect that listening to, saving, or following more music in a style may affect future recommendations, but Spotify does not guarantee that any particular genre will then appear.
- Five is a maximum, not a requirement. You can choose up to five of the options presented; the feature does not promise arbitrary genre entry.
- Repeatedly choosing familiar styles may narrow the experience. If you want breadth, try a mix of adjacent or less-familiar options when they are available.
- It remains algorithmic. Spotify has not described the feature as editorially reviewing each track or guaranteeing strict genre purity.
If the controls are missing
Spotify’s public documentation confirms the Premium audience and says the controls sit at the top of Discover Weekly, but it does not publish a definitive troubleshooting flow for every absent control. These are practical checks, not confirmed causes:
- Make sure you opened Discover Weekly, rather than a Mix or another personalized playlist.
- Check the account’s plan and try the playlist again from Made For You or by searching its name.
- Update Spotify and check another available device or platform; interface differences are possible, though Spotify has not documented a platform-specific requirement.
- If it is still absent, availability may differ by account or market, or Spotify may have changed the interface. The public sources do not provide a complete regional availability list.
Why Spotify is adding controls to a long-running playlist
Spotify framed the change as an anniversary upgrade to a playlist that had already become a major discovery channel. In its June 2025 announcement, the company reported more than 100 billion Discover Weekly tracks streamed in aggregate, over 56 million new artist discoveries per week, and said 77% of those discoveries were of emerging artists. These are Spotify-reported figures, not independently audited measurements (Spotify’s figures and feature announcement).
