As of August 18, 2026, Nintendo Switch 2 is not a dependable device for watching mainstream streaming video. Nintendo says YouTube cannot currently be used on Switch 2, and Crunchyroll says its app is unsupported. Hulu ended service on the original Switch in February 2026. For other major services, current Switch 2 support was not verified in the official sources reviewed.
Nintendo Switch 2 streaming-app compatibility
This status check reflects official U.S. support information where available, plus Nintendo’s Japan YouTube guidance. App availability can vary by region. “Not verified” means the reviewed official sources did not confirm Switch 2 support; it does not prove a service will never offer an app.

YouTube: unavailable on Switch 2, still documented on the original Switch
Nintendo Japan’s support page says YouTube cannot currently be used on Switch 2. Trying to start the original Switch version can produce an error equivalent to “Could not start.” Nintendo says it is working with software makers toward future support, but the cited guidance gives no launch date. The same page says YouTube can be downloaded from the eShop and used on the original Nintendo Switch without a Nintendo Switch Online membership. That distinction matters: an app’s continued documentation or availability for the older console does not establish Switch 2 compatibility.
Crunchyroll: a transferred icon may not launch
Crunchyroll says its app is not supported on Switch 2. If you transfer data from an original Switch, the Crunchyroll icon may appear on the new console even though the app will not launch. What happened to Hulu?
Hulu is not simply missing from Switch 2 while continuing normally on the old console. Nintendo says the Hulu app was removed from the original Switch eShop on November 6, 2025, and service on that console ended February 5, 2026. See Nintendo’s discontinuation notice.
Why can a transferred app appear but fail?
For Crunchyroll, the icon can remain visible after transfer while the app itself will not start. The practical explanation is that restoring software information or an icon is not the same as confirming the app is compatible with the new system; that explanation is an inference, not a technical account published by Nintendo. If an app fails immediately, an account, Wi-Fi connection, or subscription problem may not be the cause—the service may simply not support Switch 2.

Nintendo’s support index includes pages about apps such as YouTube and Crunchyroll because they also cover original Switch help. A support article’s presence is not proof that the app works on Switch 2. Nintendo’s app-support index.
Can a browser, casting, GameChat, or cloud gaming fill the gap?
- Web browser: The cited official Nintendo material does not establish a general-purpose Switch 2 browser that can play protected video from services such as Netflix or YouTube. There is no verified browser workaround in those sources.
- Phone casting: A phone or tablet can run streaming apps independently, but that does not mean Switch 2 accepts Chromecast, AirPlay, or another casting protocol. No Switch 2 casting solution was verified.
- GameChat: This is a communications feature, not a Netflix-style video-on-demand app. Nintendo discusses GameChat-related functions separately from third-party entertainment services in its compatibility information.
- Cloud-version games: Nintendo describes cloud versions as games streamed from a server. That does not establish support for films, television, or creator-video apps. Nintendo’s cloud-game FAQ.
A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not a workaround for app incompatibility. Nintendo says the membership is not required for YouTube on the original Switch; the Switch 2 issue is whether an app is supported, not which membership tier you have.

What to use instead for streaming
- For portable viewing now: Use a phone or tablet with the relevant service’s app. Download support, where offered, depends on the service and device.
- For a television: A dedicated streaming stick or box is the more direct choice for native video apps. Check that the specific device supports the services and formats you use in your region, and that your TV has a suitable HDMI input.
- For a Roku option: Roku’s U.S. product page lists its streaming players and current models; prices can change, so check the live listing before buying. Roku players.
- For an Apple household: Apple TV 4K is an option if its ecosystem and hardware suit you; it is not the cheapest way to add basic streaming to a TV. Apple TV 4K.
- For Alexa or Amazon users: Amazon describes its Fire TV devices, including 4K-oriented options. Amazon Fire TV information.
An original Switch may remain useful for YouTube or Crunchyroll where those apps are available, but it is not an all-purpose streaming fallback: Hulu has ended, and app support depends on service and region.
Should you buy Switch 2 for streaming?
Buy Switch 2 for its games, portability, and Nintendo ecosystem—not on the assumption that it will replace a streaming stick, tablet, or smart TV. If Netflix, YouTube, anime, sports, or live television apps are essential to your purchase, confirm support for each service on the exact device and in your region before spending. A separate streaming device is the practical companion for TV viewing; a phone or tablet is the immediate option for portable video.
