Ben and Louise Dalton, an American couple, accept an invitation to visit a British couple they met while on holiday. James Watkins wrote and directed the 2024 film. Its principal cast includes James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, Aisling Franciosi, Alix West Lefler, Dan Hough, and Scoot McNairy. Universal describes it as based on Gæsterne, the 2022 Danish film written by Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup. How is the remake different from the original?

That matters because the tension depends on the visitors’ willingness to keep negotiating. Does James McAvoy’s performance make the remake work?
McAvoy’s role sits at the hinge between welcome and threat: the host needs to be engaging enough that the invitation feels plausible, while unsettling behavior gradually changes the meaning of that charm. The film’s other leads matter just as much to the balance. The suspense depends on how the Daltons register discomfort and manage their family’s competing responses, not only on what the hosts do.

Is Speak No Evil worth watching if you saw the Danish version?
It may be worthwhile if you want to see how the premise changes when the visitors are American and the hosts are British, and how Watkins handles the transition from social discomfort to overt danger. If you are looking for a wholly different story, the remake’s basis in the same central setup may make it feel familiar. The most revealing viewing is to compare how each film uses hospitality and the visitors’ decisions, rather than expecting the changed setting alone to transform the premise.
