PerthNow reported that the visit and challenge video were followed by queues at the shop, though it did not establish whether the increase in customers lasted.
How Waterloo Takeaway Food Shop won the challenge
According to PerthNow’s report, Lees visited three Sydney “old-style” takeaway shops for a challenge comparing food, price and service. At each, he ordered a burger with the lot and chips. The shops were reportedly not told about the competition during the visits, which was intended to give Lees an unbiased experience.
Waterloo Takeaway Food Shop was selected as the winner. PerthNow identified its owner as Chicken George.
Why Spanian returned with $5,000
Lees reportedly went back to the Waterloo shop with a cameraman and praised its burgers, prices and friendly service. As PerthNow quoted him saying: “You’ve got very good burgers, very good prices and you’re very friendly,” followed by, “I’m going to give you a tip.”

The tip was $5,000. The owner initially tried to refuse, saying, “No you don’t have to…no, no,no,” according to PerthNow. The report does not provide a formal job title for Lees beyond describing him as a YouTuber.
What happened to the shop after the video
PerthNow later reported that the challenge video had received more than 600,000 views in seven days and that locals were queuing at the shop afterward. In a line quoted in that report, Lees described returning to find the shop full of people: “I came back and the shop is full of people, the lad is spinning out…I said boss have you been busy and he asked what’s going on man,”

Those details describe a reported short-term response. The report does not provide sales figures or establish that the queues, additional customers or any business boost continued over time.
When was the challenge video published?
A third-party video-page mirror lists a video titled “3 Food Spots Competed For $5000 & Didn’t Even Know It…” as published on May 10, 2025. The primary YouTube page was not located, so that date and title are attributable to the mirror, not independently confirmed against Spanian’s original upload.
