The 1996 film turns Jordan’s real baseball period and return to basketball into the setup for a cartoon sports adventure, then solves its central filmmaking challenge by combining live performers, stand-ins, animation and visual effects.
How does Jordan end up playing basketball with Bugs Bunny?
In Warner Bros.’ 1996 production notes, the Nerdlucks arrive on Earth to abduct the Looney Tunes for Swackhammer, the boss of the failing Moron Mountain attraction. The Tunes challenge the aliens to basketball. After the Nerdlucks steal professional players’ talent and transform into the Monstars, Bugs Bunny recruits Jordan, who is playing baseball after retiring from basketball, to join the Tune Squad.
That is the film’s fantasy, not a documentary account of a real game or the cause of Jordan’s real basketball comeback. Jordan plays a version of himself; the abduction, Bugs’s recruitment and the game against the Monstars are invented. Wayne Knight plays baseball publicist Stan Podolak, and Theresa Randle plays Juanita Jordan. Warner Bros.’ production notes describe the story and cast.
How did the film bring Jordan and the Looney Tunes together?
Warner Bros.’ production notes credit Jordan’s personal attorney and business manager David Falk and his production partner Ken Ross with bringing the feature idea to the studio. Warner Bros. was looking for a full-length Looney Tunes vehicle. Producer and creative lead Ivan Reitman joined the project, and Joe Pytka directed.

The earlier Hare Jordan commercial also helped establish the pairing. In a 2016 Cartoon Brew oral history, animation director Tony Cervone recalled it as the genesis of putting Jordan and Bugs Bunny together. That commercial was an antecedent, while Falk and Ross brought the feature proposal to Warner Bros.
How was Space Jam filmed with cartoons?
The production used different methods for different parts of a scene: live action gave the performers a physical court to play on, stand-ins gave Jordan something to react to, and animation and compositing replaced those stand-ins and built the finished cartoon world.

Live performers and green-suited stand-ins
Warner Bros.’ production notes describe a 60-day production schedule, with two-thirds of it on a stage where Jordan and other live performers interacted with actors in green suits representing the animated characters. The suits were removed during compositing. Warner Bros.’ behind-the-scenes account also says Jordan played basketball against green-suited stand-ins who do not appear in the finished film.
Animation, effects and virtual environments
The studio’s production notes say animation and visual-effects work continued for approximately 12 additional months after principal photography. The work involved traditional cel animation, digital animation, CGI and special effects across studios in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom; no single technique accounts for the finished film.

In the Cartoon Brew oral history, visual-effects supervisor Ed Jones recalled a 360-degree greenscreen stage with motion-tracking markers and a virtual set. He said Jordan played on a green floor with a rim and backboard, with digital environments added later. Cervone recalled practical difficulties in shots combining a real basketball with a 3D ball, including getting the net to work. These are retrospective accounts from participants, rather than production logs.
What was Jordan’s real basketball situation during filming?
The Los Angeles Times reported that filming took place at Warner Bros. Studios during summer 1995, after Jordan had returned to the Chicago Bulls following a period playing baseball. The film borrowed that real-life context for its premise, but its cartoon plot did not explain or trigger his return.

Director Joe Pytka told the Los Angeles Times in 2020 that the schedule accommodated Jordan with a late call, a two-hour lunch break and an early wrap. Pytka also recalled that the studio built a full-size basketball court and exercise facility near the set, called the Jordan Dome. He said studio visitors and publicity entourages sometimes irritated Jordan; that is Pytka’s recollection, not a claim about Jordan’s private thoughts.

WarnerMedia’s 2021 25th-anniversary announcement gives the original debut date as November 15, 1996 and says the film “earned $230M at the box office at launch.” That is the company’s launch figure, not a current, inflation-adjusted lifetime total. The same announcement noted Rhino Entertainment’s release of the soundtrack on vinyl and 25th-anniversary merchandise; it does not establish present-day stock or retail availability. Pytka also told the Los Angeles Times that games, apparel, videos and other merchandise generated additional revenue, an account attributed to him rather than an audited sales breakdown. WarnerMedia’s anniversary announcement documents the anniversary campaign.
