Trey Parker’s response to the backlash was a joke, not an apology. At San Diego Comic-Con on July 24, 2025, the South Park co-creator answered a question about the Season 27 premiere by saying, “We’re terribly sorry.” The line came one day after the episode mocked President Donald Trump through a sexual relationship with Satan and satirized the legal and corporate pressures surrounding Paramount.

“We’re terribly sorry.” That was Trey Parker’s deliberately deadpan response when moderator Josh Horowitz asked about the backlash to the South Park Season 27 premiere at San Diego Comic-Con on July 24, 2025.

The brief joke came one day after “Sermon on the ’Mount” depicted President Donald Trump in a sexual relationship with Satan and used the premise to satirize lawsuits, financial pressure and the corporate controversy surrounding Paramount, Comedy Central’s parent company. Parker did not offer a serious apology or a detailed rebuttal. Instead, he paused for comic effect and let the line speak for itself.

What Trey Parker said at Comic-Con

Parker and Matt Stone appeared in Hall H at the Comedy Central Adult Animation panel alongside Mike Judge and Andy Samberg. The appearance marked their return to Comic-Con after nearly a decade.

When Horowitz asked Parker about the reaction to the new episode, Parker answered: We’re terribly sorry. Reports described the delivery as sarcastic, with a prolonged pause or stare that made clear the words were not a genuine retraction.

The exchange was short. Parker and Stone did not use the panel to deliver an extended political speech about Trump, Paramount or the White House statement. They also largely sidestepped broader questions about the business controversy during the event. That distinction matters: the Comic-Con moment was a comic response to criticism, not a formal statement about censorship, corporate pressure or the creators’ political position.

Why the Season 27 premiere caused a backlash

“Sermon on the ’Mount,” which premiered on July 23, 2025, made Trump and Satan central to its story rather than treating Trump as a passing background gag. South Park Studios’ episode material describes residents facing a possible demise while Jesus returns with an important message. The expanded synopsis identifies Trump’s relationship with Satan and the lawsuit-related satire surrounding it.

The episode’s subject matter was unusually close to the news cycle. Its fictional plot drew on the public political and legal pressure associated with Trump while also mocking Paramount-related events. Contemporary coverage connected the satire to Paramount’s settlement with Trump over a 60 Minutes interview, the company’s negotiations around its Skydance merger and its renewed South Park streaming and production arrangement.

Those events provide the real-world setting for the jokes, but they should not be treated as proof that Parker and Stone were making a specific factual allegation about Paramount’s motives. The episode used lawsuits, money and corporate leverage as material for political satire; the plot itself is not evidence that the company took a particular action at Trump’s direction.

The White House response was issued by a spokesperson

On July 24, the White House responded through spokesperson Taylor Rogers. The statement criticized what it described as the political left’s hypocrisy: people who had previously objected to South Park’s offensive content were now celebrating the show’s mockery of Trump.

Rogers also called the program a fourth-rate show and said it had not been relevant for more than 20 years. The wording was a broad dismissal of the series and its cultural standing, rather than a detailed response to the episode’s plot.

It is important to describe this accurately. The reported statement came from Rogers as a White House spokesperson; it should not be presented as a statement personally issued by Trump unless a source specifically establishes that. The timing was notable because the response came on the same day Parker and Stone were scheduled to appear at Comic-Con.

A fast-moving target for South Park

The episode also illustrated why South Park can respond to current events more quickly than most animated series. Associated Press coverage has emphasized the show’s unusually rapid animation workflow, which allows its writers and production team to address developing stories while they are still prominent in the news.

That does not establish an exact production turnaround for “Sermon on the ’Mount.” Nor did Parker and Stone publicly confirm a specific production schedule or say that Paramount ordered changes to the episode. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the show’s production model makes highly topical satire possible, and this premiere arrived amid a live political and media-business controversy.

The Paramount connection made the satire more pointed

The Trump material was only one layer of the premiere. The episode also made the company environment around South Park part of the joke. Paramount was simultaneously dealing with the fallout from its settlement with Trump over a 60 Minutes interview, its proposed Skydance merger and the future of its arrangement with Parker and Stone.

That context gave the fictional references to legal threats and financial leverage an extra layer for viewers who had been following the news. It also made the episode more self-aware: South Park was mocking a powerful political figure while satirizing the corporate structure that distributes and produces the show.

Still, the available reporting does not support turning that context into a claim that the creators confirmed censorship, retaliation or a specific order from Paramount. The Comic-Con exchange did not provide such confirmation. Parker’s “apology” was a performance of sarcasm, not evidence of a behind-the-scenes dispute.

What the Comic-Con exchange actually means

The simplest reading is also the most accurate: the creators answered an attack with a joke. The White House statement portrayed the show as hypocritical and irrelevant. Parker responded by pretending to apologize, using the exaggerated politeness of We’re terribly sorry to mock the demand for contrition.

There was no substantive apology, no announced edit and no detailed political rebuttal at the panel. Parker and Stone kept the moment brief, which fits the show’s style and prevented a one-line gag from being mistaken for a comprehensive statement about Trump or Paramount.
