A real SoundCloud incident in December 2025 caused some users connecting through VPNs to receive HTTP 403 “Forbidden” responses. SoundCloud told BleepingComputer that configuration changes had created temporary VPN connectivity problems and that it was working on a fix. The evidence does not establish that the same incident remains active in August 2026, nor that SoundCloud permanently banned VPNs.
What happened to SoundCloud VPN users?
Reports covered on December 15, 2025 described VPN-connected users being refused by SoundCloud with a 403 error. The problem had reportedly continued for about four days, beginning around December 11. BleepingComputer said it reproduced the behavior and cited complaints from Reddit.
This was not presented as a universal SoundCloud outage. The reports concerned some connections using VPNs, and they do not prove that every VPN, country, account, or SoundCloud endpoint was affected.
SoundCloud’s senior director of communications, Sade Ayodele, attributed the symptoms to “some configuration changes.” The company said it was working to resolve the temporary VPN connectivity issue but did not give a repair timetable. The precise rule, firewall, CDN, security vendor, or IP-reputation system involved was not disclosed.

What an HTTP 403 error means
Under RFC 9110, a 403 response means that a server understood a request but refuses to fulfill it. It describes an access-control decision; it does not, by itself, identify the reason for that decision.
A 403 could be generated by SoundCloud’s application, an edge or CDN service, an IP-reputation or anti-abuse control, a regional rule, or a faulty authentication or security configuration. The status alone does not prove that a password is wrong, an account is suspended, or a device contains malware.

Was this an account ban or a permanent VPN policy?
The available evidence does not support either conclusion. Contemporaneous user reports described failures affecting both free and paid accounts, which is more consistent with a network path, exit-IP, or platform-configuration problem than with individual account enforcement. That observation does not reveal SoundCloud’s exact internal mechanism.

These are diagnostic interpretations, not confirmations of SoundCloud’s internal controls. There is no verified evidence that SoundCloud intentionally blocked all VPNs or introduced a permanent no-VPN rule.
Did a paid SoundCloud plan bypass the problem?
No evidence shows that SoundCloud Go, Go+, Next Pro, or another paid tier bypassed the December incident. Reports cited in the contemporaneous coverage indicated that membership status did not determine whether the VPN connection worked. Buying or upgrading a subscription was therefore not an established remedy.

Why did changing VPN servers sometimes help?
Some users said that a different VPN service or server location restored access, while others said those changes made no difference. Results were inconsistent and anecdotal, not an official SoundCloud workaround.
Each VPN server presents a different exit IP and may use a different route or geographic designation. A particular address can therefore be treated differently from another. Switching locations can also change catalog availability, latency, buffering, recommendations, advertising, and account-security alerts. It may create legal or terms-of-service issues in places where SoundCloud access or circumvention is restricted.

Free VPNs generally use crowded, heavily reused address ranges, which can face more anti-abuse friction; this is a general risk, not a confirmed explanation for this incident. No provider has been shown to work reliably for SoundCloud.

Could the VPN disruption be related to the security incident?
SoundCloud’s newsroom lists a December 15, 2025 post titled “Protecting Our Users and Our Service,” and contemporaneous coverage also discussed a broader security incident. The VPN disruption occurred during that period, but the specific VPN report attributes the 403 symptoms to configuration changes.
Available reporting does not establish exactly whether a security response altered VPN traffic, nor does it identify the technical component involved. It is accurate to describe the events as overlapping; it is not established that hackers caused the 403, that the 403 proves an account was compromised, or that the incident produced a permanent VPN ban. - Compare with and without the VPN. If SoundCloud works only when the VPN is off, the exit IP, route, region, or a network filter is more likely than an account ban.
- Try another server in the same country. This tests whether one exit IP or server range is affected without changing the geographic context. Do not assume that changing countries is lawful or permitted under local rules or SoundCloud’s terms.
- Test the website and official app separately. Different failures can involve browser sessions, app caches, APIs, DNS, or device settings.
- Test another network. Mobile data versus home broadband can reveal router filtering, ISP DNS behavior, corporate or school proxies, or public-Wi-Fi controls.
- Use a private browser window or clear SoundCloud cookies. This can eliminate a stale session, but it will not remove a server-side IP refusal.
- Temporarily disable other proxies, DNS filters, ad blockers, or security gateways. Change one setting at a time so the result remains interpretable; do not permanently disable antivirus or system security.
- Sign out and back in only after network testing. Repeated password changes or new accounts are unlikely to fix a network-level 403.
- Check official support and status information. Avoid unofficial clients, browser extensions marketed as unblockers, and pages asking for SoundCloud credentials.
What to include when contacting SoundCloud
Give support enough detail to distinguish a network refusal from an account or app problem:
- the exact error text and a screenshot;
- date and time, including time zone;
- country or region;
- browser or app version, device, and operating system;
- whether the error disappears without the VPN;
- VPN provider and server country, if safe to disclose;
- whether another network behaves differently.
Do not enter credentials into third-party “VPN unblocker” pages, download unofficial SoundCloud clients, or treat a commercial VPN purchase as a guaranteed solution.
Is the issue still ongoing?
“Ongoing” was historical wording for the December 15, 2025 report. That report described a problem lasting roughly four days; it did not establish a permanent outage or a confirmed resolution date.
As of August 18, 2026, the available evidence does not confirm that the same VPN-related 403 incident is still active. SoundCloud’s newsroom shows later announcements in 2026, but not a clear incident-resolution notice for this particular problem. Anyone seeing a 403 now should test the current network path and consult current official channels rather than assume the December report describes today’s state.
Diagnostic edge cases
- Mobile data works but home broadband fails: investigate router settings, ISP DNS, or local security filtering.
- Browser works but app fails: update the official app, sign out, clear its cache where supported, and retest on another network.
- IPv4 works but IPv6 fails: the two routes may be handled differently by an intermediary.
- A browser extension proxies only some traffic: page requests and media requests can receive different treatment.
- A 403 follows rapid automated requests: rate limiting or anti-abuse controls are possible, but the SoundCloud incident report did not establish that cause.
The Bottom Line
The December 2025 SoundCloud 403 problem was a real, temporary disruption affecting some VPN connections. SoundCloud attributed it to configuration changes, not to a confirmed account-ban policy. Because no evidence confirms that the incident remains active in August 2026, diagnose the current network path, avoid unofficial “unblockers,” and contact SoundCloud with precise technical details if the error persists.
