Sony has announced a feature film based on the Helldivers video game franchise, but the cast and release date reported at the announcement have since changed. Sony named Jason Momoa and a November 2027 release in May 2026; later reports say Alan Ritchson is starring and the film is now dated for June 9, 2028. Sony’s reviewed pages still list the earlier date, and they do not confirm that filming has begun.
What Sony announced
At CinemaCon on May 19, 2026, Sony said director Justin Lin discussed the upcoming film, describing it as based on Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers video game franchise. Sony named Jason Momoa as the star and said the film was expected to make its worldwide theatrical debut in November 2027. Sony’s CinemaCon account is the primary source for those original details.
The project adapts the franchise, not a plot that Sony has publicly detailed in the cited announcement. The announcement does not establish a particular character, storyline, rating, or filming schedule.
When does the Helldivers movie come out?
Later reports say Sony moved the theatrical date to June 9, 2028. ComingSoon reported the change on September 30, 2026, and GamesRadar+ reported it on October 1, 2026, both citing a schedule update reported by Deadline. Those outlets are newer than the Sony pages reviewed here, but the updated date is not yet reflected in those official pages.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The discrepancy is visible in Sony Interactive Entertainment’s August 12, 2026 release, which still listed November 10, 2027. That release also noted that Sony press releases reflect facts as of publication and may become outdated. For now, treat June 9, 2028 as the date reported by later coverage, rather than a date confirmed on the Sony pages cited here.
Who is starring in the Helldivers movie?
Sony’s May 2026 CinemaCon account named Jason Momoa. TheWrap reported on September 18, 2026, that Momoa had departed and Alan Ritchson was in talks to play one of the Helldivers. TheWrap also identified Justin Lin as director and Hutch Parker, Asad Qizilbash, and Lin as producers. ComingSoon’s September 30 report described Ritchson as starring. These are later media reports, not a replacement-cast announcement in the cited Sony material.

Is the film based on Helldivers 2?
Sony describes the film as based on Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers video game franchise. The source game, HELLDIVERS 2, is a cooperative third-person shooter available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Sony Interactive Entertainment said the game had more than 22.9 million players across those platforms as of August 9, 2026; that figure is a player count, not a sales total. Sony’s August 12 announcement also covered its addition to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog for Extra and Premium members.

The cited Sony announcement confirms the adaptation and its originally announced release window, but it does not say that principal photography has begun. The later casting and date reports cited above do not establish a filming start either. The production stage therefore remains unconfirmed in these sources; the phrase “in production” should not be taken as proof that cameras are rolling.
