Contemporary reports describe a teaser in which Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik appears defeated and his lab is in disrepair, before the story turns to Shadow as a new problem for Sonic and his allies. No public copy of that footage has been released, so what follows is an account of how the event was reported, not a frame-by-frame record of the clip.
What CinemaCon attendees saw
CinemaCon is the theater-owner trade convention, and the April 2024 presentation was a closed-door showing for exhibitors. TheWrap’s Jeremy Fuster reported the same day that attendees received the film’s first look, and his account is the earliest detailed description cited here. Nintendo Wire followed on April 12, 2024 with a longer description of the footage by Peter Glagowski. The two accounts agree on the broad arc: Robotnik is beaten, then Shadow arrives. They differ in detail, so the specifics below are attributed to whichever report describes them.
Dr. Robotnik’s “shambles” setup
The headline idea that Robotnik’s life is falling apart comes from two reports that describe him as ruined rather than triumphant.
Defeat after another loss to Sonic
According to TheWrap, Robotnik appears “utterly ruined” after another defeat by Sonic. That is the reporter’s characterization of the footage, not a line of studio copy or a transcript.

A neglected lab and a disheveled look
Nintendo Wire describes Robotnik’s lab as neglected and his hair as disheveled. Its account puts these details in the opening of the teaser, before any new plan is introduced.
The quill, the makeover, and “Let’s do this!”
In Nintendo Wire’s description, assistant Agent Stone says they have “found him” and hands Robotnik one of Sonic’s quills. Robotnik is described as licking the quill and shouting “Let’s do this!” The same account then moves into a makeover montage. These are reported character actions and dialogue as seen by one journalist, not statements by any named person involved in the production.

Shadow as the new threat
The teaser’s turn comes when Robotnik looks for a way back. TheWrap says that when Agent Stone discovered Shadow, Robotnik found a possible way to challenge the hedgehog. Nintendo Wire adds that Shadow’s awakening follows the montage and then describes a confrontation involving Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Shadow.
TheWrap also attributes a line to Knuckles about Shadow: “much more impressive than the hedgehog I fought previously.” That is dialogue as reported by the journalist from the footage. It is a character’s line, not a quote from a real person.

The film’s official listing confirms the premise that Sonic, Knuckles and Tails face Shadow, and it credits Keanu Reeves as Shadow. Read together, the reports and the listing place Shadow in the role of the new threat that Robotnik exploits or opposes, though the exact nature of that partnership or rivalry is not spelled out in the accounts quoted here.
What is and is not established
Three points are solid. The event happened on April 11, 2024 at CinemaCon. Two contemporary reports described Robotnik as defeated and Shadow as the new pressure point. The official listing supports the film’s premise and cast.

Several points are not. No public copy of the CinemaCon footage has been released in the sources cited here. The descriptions of shot-by-shot action, the exact wording of the dialogue, and the order of scenes rely on two reporters’ accounts, which differ in detail. No named filmmaker or studio executive has been quoted describing the teaser, so any comment attributed to one should be treated with caution.
The August 27, 2024 official trailer is a separate clip
Paramount Pictures published the official public trailer to its verified YouTube channel on August 27, 2024. It came months after CinemaCon and is a different piece of marketing. Readers searching for the “Sonic 3 trailer” are often looking for this later release, and it should not be confused with the April teaser.

Film release and where to watch
Paramount’s official film listing gives December 20, 2024 as the theatrical premiere and names Jim Carrey as both Ivo Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik, and Keanu Reeves as Shadow. Paramount Press Express announced on February 17, 2025 that the film would begin streaming on Paramount+ on February 18, 2025. Streaming availability varies by region and can change, so check Paramount+ in your country before assuming the film is available there.
For the CinemaCon footage itself, no public version has been released, so readers can only consult the contemporary reports named above. For the film’s marketing, the August 27, 2024 trailer is the official public clip.
Why the distinction matters
The CinemaCon footage and the later trailer answer different questions. The April teaser tells us how the studio positioned Robotnik and Shadow to a trade audience early in the marketing cycle, as reported by journalists who were in the room. The August trailer is the public version. Treating them as the same clip leads to errors about what is documented and what is not.
