Spoilers for the completed main story: Bellion is the strongest shadow in Sung Jinwoo’s army overall. He holds the Grand Marshal rank and defeats Beru when Beru challenges him after Bellion arrives. Beru, however, was Jinwoo’s leading shadow for a long stretch before that arrival. The ranking below weighs military grade and reported combat showings, while treating lower placements—and especially the Beru–Igris comparison—as less certain.
How this ranking works
This is a broad-series ranking, not an anime-only list or a snapshot from an earlier arc. It weighs the shadows’ stated grades and command positions alongside reported feats. Grade helps organize the army, but it is not a complete measure of every matchup: magic, mobility, and durability can matter more in particular battlefield roles. The available accounts are secondary editorial coverage rather than a direct examination of an official story translation, so the order below is an informed synthesis, not a definitive canon chart.
The strongest shadows, ranked
1. Bellion
Bellion is the strongest overall choice. He is the army’s Grand Marshal and Ashborn’s former right-hand subordinate. The Escapist and ComingSoon both describe him as the leading combatant; The Escapist reports that Beru challenges him for the top position and is swiftly defeated. That direct reported outcome makes Bellion’s first place the clearest placement in this list.
2. Beru
Beru, the former Ant King from Jeju Island, was Jinwoo’s strongest shadow before Bellion arrived with the Shadow Monarch’s remaining army. His later loss to Bellion does not erase that earlier standing: it reflects a change in the army’s leadership and the arrival of a more powerful combatant. Beru’s second place here recognizes both his former position and the reported challenge.

3. Igris
Igris begins as one of Jinwoo’s earliest shadows and later reaches Marshal rank. He is a formidable sword fighter, but placing him precisely against Beru is less certain. The available ranking account says their full-strength comparison remains debatable; it does not establish a decisive, equal-conditions contest that settles the order. Third is therefore a reasonable synthesis, not a proven result.
4–5. Tusk and Greed
Both are listed as General grade, and the available account treats Tusk as close to Greed in power rather than establishing a firm winner. Tusk’s magic and area attacks give him a distinctive advantage when a fight rewards ranged or broad-impact attacks; Greed’s placement near him reflects the limited comparative evidence, not a precise measurement. These two positions are best read as a shared tier.
Rank #2
6. Iron
Iron is a frontline shadow whose physical presence can be useful in a fight, but the sources do not establish him as a top-tier duelist. His position below the General-grade pair is a cautious grade-and-role synthesis, not a reported head-to-head result.
7. Kaisel
Kaisel’s flight and transport role make him valuable in ways a ground-combat ranking cannot capture. That mobility can change how Jinwoo reaches or moves through a battlefield, but it does not by itself establish Kaisel as a stronger one-on-one fighter than the shadows above him.

Rank #3
8. Jima
Jima appears among the army’s named shadows in the ranking account, but the sources provide no uniform set of feats or direct comparisons for him. This placement is consequently less secure than the top three and should not be mistaken for a firm matchup verdict.
9. Shadow Giants
The Shadow Giants add imposing bodies to the army, but the available coverage does not supply a consistent combat comparison that would justify putting them above the better-documented individual fighters. Their value as battlefield forces is distinct from a clear individual duel ranking.
10. Tank
Tank is associated with durability and a frontline role. Those traits can make him useful as a resilient combatant, but the source does not establish him as a leading duelist. He sits at the bottom of this ordered list because the evidence for higher individual combat placement is limited—not because durability has no tactical value.
Why Beru and Igris are hard to order exactly
Beru’s former status as the army’s strongest shadow and Igris’s later Marshal rank describe different evidence: one is a point-in-story leadership position, the other a grade and combat profile. The reported Bellion–Beru challenge gives a clearer direct comparison than the available material provides for Beru versus Igris. A fan-facing list can reasonably put Beru ahead, but it should not present that ordering as settled by a full-strength fight.

What a combat ranking leaves out
- Magic and area control: Tusk can contribute through magical attacks rather than matching a close-range fighter on identical terms.
- Mobility: Kaisel’s flight and transport function offer strategic value that a ground duel does not measure.
- Durability and frontline presence: Tank and Iron can serve as physical assets even without evidence that they outrank the leading fighters in duels.
The order from sixth onward is especially interpretive: the accounts describe roles and grades but do not establish a rigorous, uniform comparison across every shadow. Kamish should not be casually added as a permanent army member: ComingSoon describes his extraction as temporary because of the time elapsed since his death.
Where to start reading
The official English print edition begins with Solo Leveling, Vol. 1 (comic), a 320-page paperback published by Ize Press on March 2, 2021 (ISBN 9781975319434). It is an entry point, not the volume containing the late-story Bellion material. Yen Press lists Amazon among the retailers on its publisher catalog page.
