Kid 90 is Soleil Moon Frye’s personal documentary about growing up in Hollywood and New York, assembled from the diaries, recordings, voicemails and home videos she kept as a young person. It revisits the friendship and fun of that time alongside painful experiences she describes, without presenting her story as a universal account of childhood fame.
What is Kid 90 about?
Frye carried a video camera as a teenager in the 1990s, recording friends and the world around them. Hulu describes Kid 90 as a time capsule of young people growing up in Hollywood and New York before the internet and social media reshaped daily life (Hulu’s official press page; Hulu’s title listing).
The film draws on Frye’s own archive rather than relying only on present-day recollections. In an Entertainment Tonight interview published March 12, 2021, she said she had kept diaries since age five, began using an audio recorder at twelve, and later carried a video camera. The interview reported that her archive included hundreds of hours of home video, along with diaries, photo albums and voicemails (Entertainment Tonight interview).
How Frye turned her archive into a documentary
Frye initially planned to make a documentary about other people. While editing, she concluded that leaving herself out would make the story less truthful. The resulting film became a personal coming-of-age account, rooted in material she had saved and in conversations with people who shared that period.

Entertainment Tonight reported that Frye spent four years reviewing the footage and reconnecting with people from her past. She described the impulse to record as “the teen journalist in me” and said, “Here we were growing up in this colorful world, and I wanted to drink it all in.” Revisiting that archive was not immediate: she also told ET, “And it took an entire lifetime to really get the courage to go back into Pandora’s box.”
What struggles does Frye discuss?
In the ET interview, Frye said the film confronts painful parts of growing up in the spotlight, including substance experimentation and sexual assault. Her remarks and the film’s framing should be understood as her account of experiences she revisits; the available interviews do not establish details beyond that description. She also said that asking friends to discuss personal experiences required her to share the depths of her own experience.

Kid 90 does not frame adolescence only through harm. The same account makes room for friendship, happiness and joy alongside pain and loss. Keeping both dimensions in view matters: a story that includes difficult experiences need not erase the ordinary pleasures and connections that were part of the same years.
Frye’s account also includes support and safety
In a Salon interview published March 3, 2021, Frye recalled that her mother encouraged her to attend summer camp and have a childhood. She also described the Punky Brewster set as a place where she could play, feel safe and be treated kindly. She emphasized that this was her own experience: “I can only speak to what my experience was through that, which was that we had really kind people around us that made sure that we felt safe and protected and loved.” (Salon interview.)

That qualification is central to reading her story fairly. Frye’s memories include both vulnerability and support; they do not claim that every child actor had the same experience. In the same interview, she expressed the view that difficult experiences do not have to define a person.
