Amit Chaudhuri’s Sojourn follows an unnamed Indian academic on a temporary appointment in Berlin, where encounters with an exiled poet, a local woman and the city itself unsettle his sense of home. The novel can be read as a study of deliberate exile and modern identity, but that is an interpretive lens—not a single diagnosis the book imposes.
What is Sojourn about?
An unnamed academic arrives in Berlin as a visiting professor. Penguin Random House India’s synopsis says he befriends Faqrul, an enigmatic exiled poet, and Birgit, with whom he shares an attraction. He also tries to understand his cleaner. As the stay unfolds, his effort to find meaning and transformation becomes entangled with uncertainty about his place in the present. Penguin Random House India’s book page presents these encounters as the novel’s central situation.
The Guardian’s review describes the appointment as lasting four months and emphasizes the protagonist’s wandering and disorientation. That account adds a sense of duration and movement to the publisher’s synopsis: the stay is temporary, but it gives the narrator time to observe the city and question the assumptions he brings with him.
Why read the narrator as a deliberate exile?
Exile in Sojourn need not mean a forced expulsion from home. In Scroll’s reading, the narrator is a deliberate exile: he remains at a distance from both Berlin and familiar ideas of home, turning inward rather than settling comfortably into either. This is a reviewer’s interpretation of his posture, not a plot fact or a definitive statement of the novel’s meaning. Scroll’s review connects that distance to unease about India and identity.

The title points to a stay that is temporary, but the narrator’s estrangement makes the question larger than travel: what does it mean to belong when one is away from the familiar, yet does not simply adopt the place one has entered? Scroll frames this unease through the question, “Are we Indians or becoming something else, as many have bemoaned and cautioned?” That is the reviewer’s formulation, not a line established as coming from the novel.
How does Berlin shape the novel’s ideas of belonging?
Berlin is more than a backdrop for the narrator’s private uncertainty. The Guardian’s Edward Docx describes Chaudhuri’s literary preoccupation as “belonging and not belonging” and reads the novel as a meditation on identity shaped by setting. In this account, being somewhere new does not simply replace one identity with another; it unsettles the terms by which the narrator understands himself.

Chaudhuri described the book as “an attempt to make sense out of my response not only to Berlin, but also to a foreign city that feels curiously intimate to the person who arrives there.” The phrase captures the tension between distance and familiarity without claiming that the city resolves it. Berlin can feel foreign and intimate at once, just as the narrator’s relation to home remains unsettled.
The city’s history also presses into present experience. Kirkus’s review points to traces including the Berlin Wall site, a bomb-damaged church tower and a place associated with the deportation of Jews. It describes moments in which the narrator senses earlier times and inhabits other viewpoints. These details support a reading of Berlin as a place where past and present coexist; they should not be mistaken for a claim that the novel offers a comprehensive history of the city. What kind of novel is it?
Reviews describe Sojourn as impressionistic and meandering, with close attention to ordinary details rather than the momentum of a conventional, plot-driven story. The Guardian’s account suggests that small observations accumulate meaning as the city’s histories and the narrator’s private thoughts intersect. Readers looking primarily for a tightly sequenced chain of events may find the book’s wandering form less direct; that looseness is part of how it attends to uncertainty and perception.
It is tempting to label a novel concerned with a writer’s inner life and estrangement “autofiction,” but Chaudhuri cautions against treating the term as automatic. In a 2023 Kunzum Review interview, he said: “I don’t know if ‘auto-fiction’ is necessarily the best term to speak about works that are about the process of writing itself and also about this kind of estrangement—from not only one’s identity but the idea that if you write about yourself, you’re revealing something.” His comments complicate the label rather than definitively settle the book’s genre. Which edition and page count are listed?
Bibliographic figures differ by edition. Penguin Random House India lists its paperback at 176 pages, published in December 2024, ISBN 9780143473084; the same page lists a hardback with ISBN 9780670089932. Kirkus gives the New York Review Books edition a September 6, 2022 release date and 140 pages, ISBN 978-1-68137-708-7. These figures describe separate editions and should not be combined into one page count.
