Sofía Vergara said that different wishes about having children contributed to her divorce from Joe Manganiello, and that she expected their split to draw attention because they are celebrities. In a later interview, Manganiello disputed that explanation as the reason for the breakup, saying they had tried to have a family and eventually grew apart. Their comments offer two accounts, not a definitive explanation of the marriage’s private end.
What Sofía Vergara said contributed to the divorce
In a January 2024 interview with Spain’s El País, Vergara said that she and Manganiello had different wishes about having children. She said she did not want to become an older mother and felt ready to be a grandmother rather than start over as a parent. ABC News reported her comments on January 23, 2024: ABC News’ account of Vergara’s explanation.

That was Vergara’s account of a factor in the split. It should not be treated as an agreed or independently established account of why the marriage ended.
How Vergara described the public attention
Vergara told CBS Sunday Morning that she knew the divorce would become public because both she and Manganiello are well-known. “You can’t hide those things,” she said. She also described the press coverage as less speculative and more respectful than she had expected, saying, “It wasn’t bad.” Fox News reported her remarks on January 15, 2024: Fox News’ report on Vergara’s comments about publicity.

What Manganiello said in response
In a July 2024 interview with Men’s Journal, Manganiello challenged the idea that disagreement over having children was why the marriage ended. He said the couple had tried to have a family during the first year and a half of their relationship and that they later grew apart. Responding to the children explanation, he said, “That’s simply not true.” He described growing apart as something that can happen: “Sometimes that happens.” Good Morning America reported his comments on July 17, 2024: Good Morning America’s report on Manganiello’s response.
Vergara’s and Manganiello’s comments are different accounts of the breakup. The interviews establish what each said; they do not resolve the private reasons for the divorce.

When they announced their split
The couple announced in July 2023 that they had decided to divorce after seven years of marriage. Reporting on Manganiello’s filing said it cited “irreconcilable differences.” That is a legal ground stated in the filing, not confirmation of the couple’s private motives. ABC News covered the announcement and filing alongside Vergara’s later explanation: ABC News’ report.
