Snow White (2025) trades the old story of a princess waiting for Prince Charming for a musical about an heir trying to reclaim her kingdom. Rachel Zegler gives the heroine warmth and resolve, but the film’s updated romance and computer-generated woodland characters make this a noticeably uneven reimagining rather than a straightforward revival of Disney’s 1937 classic.
What kind of Snow White is this?
Directed by Marc Webb and written by Erin Cressida Wilson, Disney’s Snow White is a live-action musical reimagining of the 1937 animated film, not a scene-for-scene reproduction. It stars Rachel Zegler as Snow White, Andrew Burnap as Jonathan, and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. Disney lists it as a PG musical, fantasy, and drama, with a runtime of 109 minutes and a U.S. theatrical release date of March 21, 2025. Disney’s film page describes the production and credits new songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

Does Snow White get to lead her own story?
More than in the familiar “waiting for Prince Charming” version of the tale, this Snow White is framed as an heir with a stake in her kingdom’s future. Disney’s synopsis says she finds her voice and gains the strength to face the Evil Queen; Disney+’s synopsis describes a group joining her quest to restore the kingdom and bring kindness back to the land.
That shift gives the heroine a clearer public purpose: kindness is not merely a trait that makes her lovable, but part of how she inspires other people to act. TIME’s review sees the character as oriented toward building a better world, while the Associated Press argues that the film’s attempt to recontextualize the original can feel strained. The idea of a more active Snow White is promising; whether the script makes that transformation feel fully earned is a more debatable matter.

- Experience this musical, live-action reimagining of Walt Disney?s groundbreaking animated classic. Follow Snow White?s adventure as she journeys into magical woods to escape the Evil Queen and meets the beloved Bashful, Sleepy, Sneezy, Happy, Dopey, Grumpy and Doc who join her quest to restore the kingdom.
Is Jonathan Prince Charming?
No. Jonathan is Snow White’s romantic counterpart, but he is a common bandit, not a prince, according to TIME’s review. The film therefore changes the romance as well as the heroine’s role: it is not simply a story about a royal rescuer arriving to resolve her troubles.
The original’s “Someday My Prince Will Come” has also been dropped, as the Associated Press notes. That is a pointed adaptation choice, even if the new relationship does not replace the old song’s romantic ideal with an equally memorable musical centerpiece. Jonathan’s less exalted status fits the film’s emphasis on shared effort, though viewers looking for a sweeping, classic-style romance may find the connection less compelling than the premise suggests.
How do the songs and visuals work?
Pasek and Paul’s original songs give the reimagining a distinct musical identity alongside its familiar story. The Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus praises Zegler’s performance while cautioning that the source-material treatment and stylistic choices will not please everyone. Its audience summary is warmer about the songs and the film’s spirit; those are aggregator summaries, not a guarantee that viewers share one reaction.

- Experience this musical, live-action reimagining of Walt Disney's groundbreaking animated classic.
The most consistent visual reservation concerns the dwarfs and woodland creatures, which are computer-generated. Jake Coyle’s Associated Press review criticizes the dwarfs’ uncanny quality, and TIME also calls their presentation a major misstep. That reaction is not universal, but the characters’ digital look is a conspicuous choice in a story whose emotional appeal depends on the world around Snow White feeling welcoming.

How does it compare with the 1937 film?
Disney presents the new film as honoring and expanding the original, but the balance between familiarity and revision is the central question of the adaptation. It keeps the broad fairy-tale conflict and musical form while redirecting Snow White toward leadership, removing the old prince-centered song, and pairing her with a nonroyal bandit. Those changes are substantial enough that “faithful” or “unfaithful” alone does not describe the result: the film retains the story’s recognizable foundations while reworking what its heroine wants and how she might get it.
Reviews reflect that tension. The Associated Press gives the film two stars out of four and criticizes both the CGI dwarfs and the effort to reframe the original. TIME is more favorable about the remake and its heroine’s social vision, though it too faults the dwarfs’ look. Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed critics consensus likewise recognizes Zegler’s performance while noting that the treatment and style may not work for everyone. These are critical perspectives, not a universal verdict.

Should you watch it?
Watch it if you are interested in a musical reworking that gives Snow White a kingdom to help restore rather than making her story revolve around waiting for a prince. Zegler’s performance and the film’s more active vision of its heroine are its strongest draws. Go in with tempered expectations if you want the original’s romance and visual style preserved, or if computer-generated storybook characters tend to distract you.
For practical context, Disney lists the film as PG and 109 minutes. Disney+ carries a notice that some flashing lights sequences or patterns may affect photosensitive viewers. Streaming and home-video availability can vary by region; Disney Japan identifies Blu-ray and DVD formats, but that does not establish a listing or release date in other markets.
