Saturday Night Live opened its first Weekend Update of 2025 with Colin Jost and Michael Che trading jokes about Donald Trump’s inaugural portrait and the cold-weather move indoors. Michael Longfellow brought TikTok’s U.S. shutdown into the segment, and Sarah Sherman appeared as the original Nosferatu to weigh in on Robert Eggers’ remake.
The segment aired during Saturday Night Live’s January 18, 2025 broadcast, hosted by Dave Chappelle with GloRilla as musical guest. NBC lists the episode as Season 50, Episode 11. NBC’s episode archive confirms the broadcast date and host.
Jost and Che take aim at Trump’s portrait and inauguration
Jost addressed Donald Trump’s newly released official inaugural portrait, joking about its dramatic lighting: “Donald Trump released his official inaugural portrait and the photo was lit, I assume, by hell opening up.” He also teased Trump’s effort to look tough, according to People’s recap.
Che’s jokes turned to the inauguration being moved indoors because of cold weather. The recap says he connected the change to the previous inauguration and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. These were jokes within the segment, not a full account of the inauguration.

Appearing soon after TikTok went dark in the United States, Longfellow satirized the rationale for banning an app because it was Chinese. He also joked about data privacy and his own TikTok use, as People’s recap describes. The segment treated the controversy as comedy; it did not settle the legal or policy arguments around TikTok.
Sarah Sherman appears as the original Nosferatu
Sherman played the original Nosferatu and responded to Robert Eggers’ recent remake. She first joked that she disliked the film, then reversed course, saying she liked it and would have welcomed an audition. The appearance made the remake another of the segment’s comic targets, alongside the political and TikTok material.

Chappelle’s Trump remarks were in the monologue, not Weekend Update
Chappelle also addressed Trump during the episode, but in his opening monologue rather than at the Weekend Update desk. TV Insider reported that Chappelle urged the president-elect to remember that people were counting on him and show empathy for displaced people; he said, “The presidency is no place for petty people.” TV Insider’s account distinguishes those remarks from the Update segment.
