Calling it the best show on TV at depicting tech fraud is a critical judgment, not an established ranking—but the season makes a persuasive case by showing how those forces can collide.
Why season 4 moves beyond the trading floor
When Pierpoint closes, Harper Stern and Yasmin Kara need a new arena in which their ambitions can collide. Bad Wolf’s official season 4 page describes a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game involving a fintech company arriving in London. The BBC/HBO drama, created and written by Mickey Down and Konrad Kay, expands from workplace finance drama into a corporate thriller.
The setting helps the season connect personal rivalry to the systems around Tender. The Guardian reported that the creators designed Tender to keep Harper and Yasmin crossing paths after Pierpoint’s closure, with the season reaching locations including Paris, Ghana, New York, Sunderland, Austria and London. That broader canvas makes the company’s story feel less like an isolated office scandal and more like a network of money, reputation and influence.
How the Tender fraud story works
A short thesis turns suspicion into a financial bet
Harper is looking for a company to short: she takes a position that can profit if its stock price falls. That gives her a reason to investigate claims that Tender’s public picture may not match its underlying business. TechCrunch’s account of the plot describes Tender as a fraudulent fintech and payment processor, and says a journalist’s concerns help set the investigation in motion. Sweetpea and Kwabena travel to Ghana as part of that inquiry.

Inflated metrics make a business look bigger than it is
The show’s alleged mechanism is simple to follow: fabricated users support inflated revenue claims, which in turn make the company appear to have more cash and scale than it does. TechCrunch reports Sweetpea’s blunt summary: “fake users drive fake revenue drives fake cash.” These are plot allegations about Tender, a fictional company—not findings about a real fintech firm.
That chain matters dramatically because it joins a familiar startup language of growth metrics to the incentives of investors and executives. A headline number can suggest momentum; if the underlying activity is invented, each later claim built on it becomes suspect. Harper’s short thesis gives those suspicions financial stakes, while the reporting and investigation supply the route by which they might be tested.

Why payment processing and age verification belong in the plot
Tender’s business is tied to payment processing for adult-content platforms, and the company’s proposed pivot adds pressure to its commercial story. That makes regulation part of the plot rather than a distant backdrop. WIRED’s coverage connects the storyline to the UK’s Online Safety Act: relevant age-verification requirements took effect in July 2025.
Co-creator Konrad Kay told WIRED, “We’ve got the OnlyFans piece and then we’ve got the fintech piece, and then we’ve got the fraud piece.” The combination exposes how a platform’s ability to accept payments, its users’ experience and its regulatory obligations can shape its business model. Co-creator Mickey Down described the online sex-work storyline as something that “can be empowering and exploitative.” That is his characterization of the show’s subject, not a universal description of adult-platform work.

What makes the fraud angle feel convincing—and what it cannot prove
The season’s strength is not that it establishes a real-world case file. Tender is fictional, and the available accounts do not show that its scheme reproduces a specific company or fraud. Instead, the plot feels recognizable because it connects plausible pressures: the presentation of growth, scrutiny of business claims, the possibility of a falling share price, and regulation of the underlying service.
Real fraud is also difficult to measure consistently. The International Monetary Fund’s March 2026 working paper, The Rise of Cyber Events and Digital Fraud in the Financial Sector, summarizes UNODC reporting: 60 jurisdictions had reported cyber-related fraud statistics, but only 13 had enough data for a ten-year trend analysis as of April 2025. The paper defines cyber-related fraud by whether computer data or systems were integral to the crime’s modus operandi, while distinguishing offenses that use digital tools from those that specifically target computer systems. It warns that differences in definitions, counting and reporting make comparisons across countries difficult. Those caveats limit what the figures can say about prevalence or trends; they do not establish that Tender’s fictional scheme is typical.

Why the season earns the comparison with other TV
Calling Industry the best current show about tech fraud is an argument about execution, not a verifiable league table. The Tender story has a strong claim to the distinction because it does more than announce that a company is crooked: it ties the alleged fraud to the business model, the people investigating it, the market position that could reward exposure, and the rules shaping the sector. Its human stakes sit alongside the machinery of finance rather than being replaced by it.
HBO’s February 2026 renewal announcement reported that season 4’s global viewing was pacing roughly 30% ahead of season 3, and that U.S. cross-platform viewers averaged 1.7 million per episode. Those are figures attributed to HBO, not independently verified audience measurements here. The same release confirmed an eight-episode season 4 and a fifth, final season.
