How many people watched SNL50?
NBCUniversal reported a combined audience of 14.8 million for the special across NBC and Peacock, measured live plus same day. The reported total included Peacock live-streaming figures, so it is not a figure for NBC’s linear broadcast alone. NBC also reported a 2.53 rating among adults 18–49 across the two platforms in the same viewing window. These are different measures: 14.8 million is a total-viewer count, while 2.53 is a rating for a specified age group.
NBCUniversal’s ratings announcement provides the network’s figures; the Associated Press also reported that the audience total included Peacock live-streaming numbers.
What does “most-watched entertainment telecast in five years” mean?
NBC said the special was its most-watched entertainment telecast in five years in both total viewers and adults 18–49. The comparison point it named was the 2020 Golden Globe Awards. This is a network-specific, time-bounded claim about entertainment telecasts; it does not mean SNL50 drew the largest audience of any program on television, nor does it establish the largest audience in SNL history.

The original “shatters ratings records” framing needs that qualification. NBC separately described SNL50 as the highest-performing SNL episode or special on record for social interaction, but that is a social-media measure, not an all-time television audience record.
How the anniversary special was measured and aired
The special aired live on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. NBC’s preview listed an 8–11 p.m. ET schedule and called it a three-hour special; the Associated Press described the completed broadcast as roughly three and a half hours. Scheduled slot and actual broadcast duration are therefore not the same figure.

The broadcast was the culmination of a weekend-long anniversary celebration. Related programming included the Peacock docuseries SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, a three-hour SNL music documentary, and a Homecoming Concert. Those were separate anniversary offerings, not components of the 14.8 million audience figure.
What about the social-media record?
NBCUniversal reported 8.7 million social interactions, calling the special its most social entertainment telecast in two years and the highest-performing SNL episode or special on record for social interaction. This claim concerns engagement on social platforms; it should not be read as another television ratings measure.

Peacock streamed the special when it aired. Its current catalog availability, geographic access, and plan terms can change, so check Peacock’s listing for your location.
