Melissa McCarthy’s sixth time hosting Saturday Night Live put a snow-covered piano struggle at the center of the show: while performing a “mouth horn” version of “Carol of the Bells,” she and Marcello Hernández tussled over the instrument as snow fell around them. The December 6, 2025, episode also featured musical guest Dijon and sketches that made the most of McCarthy’s commitment to physical comedy and outsized characters.
What happened in McCarthy’s monologue?
McCarthy returned to Studio 8H for the seventh episode of Season 51. Peacock described it as her first time headlining in eight years, though she had hosted the show six times in total. In the monologue, she sang “Carol of the Bells” using a mouth-horn impression, then became embroiled in a comic struggle with Hernández over a piano as artificial snow fell on them. Kenan Thompson joined in, and the cast performed “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” Peacock’s episode recap recounts the monologue and the cast’s performance.
Which sketches stood out?
“Free Sample”
McCarthy played a supermarket shopper who turns an ordinary free sample into an opportunity to overshare emotionally. The premise gave her room to shift rapidly between everyday politeness and personal confession, a strong fit for her character-driven style.
“A Helping Hand”
In another featured sketch, she played an overbearing neighbor. The joke depends on the gap between the neighbor’s apparent helpfulness and how thoroughly she intrudes on other people’s lives.

The UPS driver and other sketches
A sketch about a UPS driver caught on security footage supplied another vehicle for McCarthy’s physical comedy. The Los Angeles Times also singled out “Cousin Planet” and a holiday-decorations segment. Its episode review discusses those sketches alongside the monologue and Weekend Update.
What happened in the cold open and Weekend Update?
The cold open staged a Pentagon press conference with political figures played by cast members. The recaps describe different details of the scene, so their character identifications are best kept separate: Peacock identifies Jeremy Culhane as the Pentagon spokesperson and James Austin Johnson as Trump; the Los Angeles Times describes Colin Jost as Pete Hegseth and Sarah Sherman as Matt Gaetz.

On Weekend Update, Sherman appeared as a drunk raccoon. Both the political cold open and the Update segment drew on recognizable public figures and comic character work, while McCarthy’s sketches supplied the episode’s most prominent showcase for her physical performance.
How did Dijon’s performances fit the episode?
Dijon was the musical guest and performed two songs with a 12-person band, according to Peacock. The Los Angeles Times identifies the songs as “HIGHER!” and “Baby!/Another Baby!” The music provided a contrast to an episode otherwise built around holiday imagery, character sketches and McCarthy’s energetic physical comedy.

Was the episode a success?
The response depended on what reviewers valued. Peacock’s official recap called the episode an “all-timer,” emphasizing McCarthy’s physical comedy and character work. The Los Angeles Times praised her commitment and several sketches, but also noted weaker sections and muffled microphone sound. Boston.com took a more restrained view: its December 7 recap said McCarthy elevated some material, while the episode lacked a breakthrough sketch.
Those assessments are not necessarily contradictory. A host can make individual sketches enjoyable without the night producing one standout premise or maintaining the same quality throughout. McCarthy’s physical commitment was a clear strength; whether that adds up to an exceptional episode depends on how much weight a viewer gives to performance versus overall sketch consistency.
