Kiki Wong won The Smashing Pumpkins’ open audition and was announced on April 26, 2024, as an additional guitarist for the band’s touring lineup. The announcement said more than 10,000 applications were submitted before a smaller group auditioned in person in Los Angeles.
Who is the Smashing Pumpkins’ new guitarist?
Wong is a Los Angeles musician with a performance background that includes work with Taylor Swift, Usher and Bret Michaels, as well as groups including Nylon Pink, Hellfire Heart and Vigil of War, according to the band’s announcement. Pitchfork also noted that she played drums during Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” performance at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards; that appearance was a drum performance, not part of the Pumpkins guitar audition.
The position announced was an additional touring guitarist. The announcement listed Wong alongside touring members Jack Bates on bass and Katie Cole on guitar, keys and vocals. It did not announce that Wong had replaced a core studio member.
How did the open audition work?
The Oriel Company announcement said the band invited applicants for an additional guitarist to join them on the road. More than 10,000 applications were submitted, according to that announcement; the figure is not independently audited in the sources cited here. Billy Corgan reviewed submissions, after which a smaller group auditioned in person in Los Angeles the previous month.

In a May 2024 interview, she described adapting to the Pumpkins’ musical style as a challenge and discussed lessons, blues roots and acoustic playing. She said, “There’s so much feel and rhythmic eloquence that goes into their style of playing.” That was her reflection on the adjustment, not a formal list of the band’s audition criteria.

The announcement’s list of her work with artists and bands points to an established live-performance career before the selection. In the May 2024 interview, Wong also said she planned to take guitars from Jackson, PRS, Yamaha and Zemaitis on tour. That does not identify which guitar, if any, she used during the audition.
