The official trailer for Small Things Like These introduces Cillian Murphy as Bill Furlong, a coal merchant and father in 1985 Ireland who discovers troubling secrets connected to his town’s convent. The film draws on Claire Keegan’s Booker Prize-nominated novel and the history of the Magdalene laundries.
What the trailer reveals
In the trailer, Furlong’s discovery points toward abuse concealed within the convent and a community’s silence around it. Lionsgate’s synopsis says the discovery forces him to confront his own past as well as the town’s complicity. “Dark truth” is promotional framing for those secrets; the trailer does not establish every detail of the film’s plot.

The production company, Big Things Films, describes the story as taking place over Christmas in 1985. Its synopsis connects the film to the Magdalene laundries, which it describes as institutions run by Roman Catholic organizations, ostensibly to reform “fallen young women,” and says they operated from the 1820s until 1996. That is the production company’s historical framing; the film’s story is an adaptation, not a documentary account.
