In February 2025, Sly Stone’s children described a quieter, more personal side of their father in Questlove’s documentary Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius). The headline’s “six years after he got clean” referred to Stone’s reported recovery beginning in 2019. It is now a historical account: Stone died on June 9, 2025, after a prolonged battle with COPD and other underlying health issues, his family said.
What Stone’s children said about his family life
The February 14, 2025 article that prompted the “normal life” headline recounted memories shared by Stone’s son, Sylvester Stewart Jr., and daughters Novena Carmel and Phunne Stone in Sly Lives! The recollections offered a glimpse of family relationships beyond Stone’s public persona, but the article is secondary reporting: it does not provide a transcript or link to a primary interview. Its descriptions should therefore be read as reported paraphrases, not verified verbatim quotations. Headline Society’s February 14, 2025 report
Carmel’s memories of distance and connection
Carmel described having limited contact with her father during childhood and recalled a painful phone call when she was ten. The article also recounts a later birthday request: Stone wanted a big pizza with all the toppings. It says he enjoyed Westerns and cars, everyday interests that helped frame the quieter family portrait.
Stewart Jr. and Phunne on a more ordinary side
Stewart Jr. characterized the recent years he shared with his father as the most ordinary time they had spent together. Phunne described Stone as shy and recalled that drugs had once made him feel fearless. These memories convey the children’s perspectives; they do not establish a medical explanation for Stone’s behavior or recovery.

What “six years after he got clean” meant
The original article, published February 14, 2025, described Stone as 81 and reported that he had gotten clean in 2019. That timeline made “six years” a shorthand for the period between the reported start of his recovery and the article’s publication. The 2019 detail comes from that secondary account, not the later family death statement. Headline Society’s report
The family later said Stone had been battling COPD and other underlying health issues before his death. Its statement does not connect those conditions to his reported sobriety, and the two facts should not be treated as cause and effect.
How the documentary fits the story
Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius), directed by Questlove, explores the life and legacy of Sly & the Family Stone. The official Sly Stone site records a Sundance premiere on January 25, 2025, followed by a Hulu premiere on February 13, 2025. Those are release dates, not confirmation of present-day availability; streaming catalogs vary by territory and can change. Official Sly Stone site documentary announcement
For viewers, the children’s accounts make the film a family-perspective companion to Stone’s music and public history. They are not a substitute for Stone’s own account: his memoir, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin): A Memoir, was published in 2024, according to his official site, and the Associated Press identifies it by that title.
