Spoilers for the Season 4 finale, “Hello Goodbye.” River Cartwright ends the finale back alongside Jackson Lamb, but not with a clear route back to MI5’s Park. He has placed his grandfather David in a care home, learned that Frank Harkness is his biological father, and been left to absorb the deaths and betrayals that reshaped his family. Showrunner Will Smith says River is “haunted by it” and “unsettled by it” as the story moves into Season 5.
Where does River go at the end of Season 4?
River’s immediate destination is Slough House’s orbit: after moving David into a care home, he meets Lamb at a pub. The subdued scene gives River space to process a season’s worth of loss and revelations, and reconnects him with Lamb after much of the season kept them apart. Smith described the moment as a slight lift after the care-home scene, not as a career turning point.
River’s longer-term destination is unresolved. The finale does not show him returning to MI5’s Park or establish his eventual rank. Jack Lowden, who plays River, has said that River “ultimately wants to go back to the Park, wants to be in the top seat.” That is the actor’s description of the character’s ambition—not confirmation of what the next season will do.
Who is River’s father, and what did David hide?
Frank Harkness is River’s biological father. David and his wife Rose raised River without telling him the truth. The revelation overturns River’s understanding of his family: David is no longer simply the saintly grandfather River admired, and his father is a dangerous man.

Smith described River’s emotional disorientation as “losing his grandfather, finding his father, realizing he’s a maniac, and being left with Lamb as the only kind of father figure in his life.” David’s placement in a care home compounds that upheaval. River has acted to put him somewhere safer, but David did not go willingly, making the decision painful rather than a clean break.
Why does MI5 let Frank Harkness go?
Frank’s release is tied to a threat against MI5 itself. Letters left with Molly Doran could expose covert jobs Frank had carried out for British Intelligence if the service refused to let him go. The finale therefore makes clear that this is not merely a case of MI5 failing to catch an outside mercenary: the institution has its own history with Frank and has reason to fear what he could reveal.

The family history also helps explain the chain of events behind the Westacres attack. Frank impregnated David’s daughter, Isobel. David sent Sam Chapman to arrange Isobel’s return, and the exchange involved MI5 “cold body” identities. One of those identities was later used in the attack, leaving a trail toward Frank. He sent his sons after people who could connect him to it.
What do the deaths mean for River and Slough House?
River’s family revelations arrive alongside losses within the team. Marcus is killed during Patrice’s attack, and Sam Chapman is also lost. Smith said River and Shirley are still dealing with the fallout as Season 5 begins. The pub scene with Lamb offers company, not an undoing of what happened.
