Spoilers for Season 4, Episode 6, “Hello Goodbye,” and earlier episodes. River Cartwright learns that Frank Harkness is his biological father, but Frank’s answer to that revelation is to recruit him into a lethal operation—not to make peace. River refuses and helps capture him. MI5 soon releases Frank after he threatens to expose the service’s past use of his mercenary network. At Slough House, Patrice’s attack kills Marcus Longridge and Sam Chapman; David Cartwright survives. The finale leaves River facing a broken image of his grandfather and a dangerous father who remains free.

Who is Frank Harkness, and why did he target David and Chapman?

Frank is an ex-intelligence operative who turned a covert organization into a paid assassination outfit. David Cartwright helped establish that operation decades earlier, providing resources and identities. David initially rejected Frank’s offer to use the group’s services. Later, when David’s daughter Isobel was drawn into Frank’s compound in France, David sent fixer Sam Chapman to trade cash, weapons, explosives and MI5 “cold body” identities for her return.

Frank’s son Yves used an MI5 identity in the Westacres attack, giving investigators a path from the attack to Frank’s network and its links to the service. Frank then sought to eliminate David and Sam, the people who could connect him to those events. Patrice killed Sam, but David survived.

Why does MI5 let Frank go?

River catches Frank, but Frank’s leverage is political rather than physical. He has left letters documenting earlier jobs his group performed for British intelligence and threatens to expose them if he remains detained. Public disclosure would reveal MI5’s past use of an unofficial assassination capability and risk a public and diplomatic crisis. MI5 releases him to protect the institution. Frank is therefore free at the end of the season, but the finale does not establish that he is permanently protected or that his threat is over.

What does the reveal mean for River?

Frank is River’s biological father, but the news brings no genuine reunion. Frank is composed and personable on the surface; what he offers River is a place in his operation. River refuses. Their “Hello, dad. Hello, son” exchange acknowledges the biological fact with irony, not affection. Actor Hugo Weaving described Frank as River’s father and noted that the series makes Frank’s family structure more extreme than the book’s.

The revelation also changes how River sees David. David helped Frank’s operation and later made the bargain connected to Isobel’s return, while concealing the circumstances of River’s birth. The showrunner described River’s arc as the loss of his grandfather’s halo: River discovers David’s involvement in darker events, finds his biological father, and realizes Frank is a maniac. River is left to reckon with a grandfather who was not the uncomplicated hero he believed in and a father who is dangerous.

Who dies in the Slough House attack?

On Frank’s orders, Patrice attacks Slough House. Marcus Longridge dies in the shootout, and Sam Chapman is also dead after Patrice’s attack on him. The team captures Patrice; after Shirley leaves, Coe kills him. David survives the attack on him.

Marcus’s death matters beyond the immediate loss. Actor Kadiff Kirwan said it is meant to register through its effects on Slough House, especially Shirley, and through Lamb’s effort to look after Marcus’s family. The showrunner also described Lamb as losing both Marcus and Sam, and highlighted his response to Sam’s body as an important emotional moment.

What does the final River and Lamb scene mean?

After the care-home decision about David, River is left with a family history shaped by violence, bargains and concealment. Lamb cannot repair that history, but he offers River company. The showrunner said the scene was intended to provide a slight lift after the sadness of the care-home scene; the team chose dialogue after initially considering silence. He described Lamb as the father figure left in River’s life.

The exchange does not resolve River’s grief, nor does it settle Frank’s threat. The showrunner said River remains haunted and unsettled by the season’s events, with consequences still to come.

What the ending leaves unresolved

  • Frank is at liberty after using evidence of MI5’s past operations as leverage. His future actions are not resolved in the finale.
  • River has learned the truth about his parentage, but has not reconciled with Frank or with everything he has learned about David.
  • Lamb’s support gives River a measure of companionship, not a replacement for the family history and losses the season has exposed.

Apple’s listing identifies “Hello Goodbye” as Season 4, Episode 6 and summarizes the finale as Lamb questioning David about France while River comes face-to-face with the enemy. The episode was released October 9, 2024. Apple TV episode listing
