Sky is giving TV customers HBO Max and Disney+ alongside Netflix—but here’s why I’d still pay extra

Sky Ultimate TV includes Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, discovery+ and selected Hayu content, but the included plans are advert-supported entry-level tiers. Here is when paying extra still makes sense.

Sky is putting Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, discovery+ and selected Hayu content inside one UK television package. The catch is that the included services are mostly advert-supported entry-level tiers—so viewers with premium home-cinema equipment may still have a good reason to pay extra.

Sky’s 2026 entertainment strategy is easy to understand: put more of the major streaming services inside one Sky subscription. Sky Ultimate TV brings together Sky’s own channels and originals with Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, discovery+ and selected Hayu content.

That sounds like an argument for cancelling separate streaming subscriptions. For many households, it may be. But I would still be prepared to pay extra for some of those services—not because Sky’s catalogue is too small, but because the versions included in the bundle are the entry-level, advert-supported tiers.

If you watch on an ordinary television and mainly want convenient access to more programmes, Sky’s offer could be excellent value. If you have a large OLED television and a Dolby Atmos-capable sound system, the included subscriptions may be a useful starting point rather than the complete home-cinema experience.

What Sky Ultimate TV includes

Sky’s current UK package information lists Sky Ultimate TV from £24 per month for new customers on a 24-month term. A 31-day rolling option is listed from £30 per month. These are prices identified during the 2026 research for this article, not a permanent price guarantee: Sky says pricing can change during a 24-month minimum term, so check the current offer before subscribing.

The package includes:

  • More than 130 channels, including Sky Atlantic, Sky One, Sky Documentaries, Sky Comedy and Sky Witness
  • Sky originals and free-to-air channels
  • Netflix Standard with Ads
  • Disney+ Standard with Ads
  • HBO Max Basic with Ads, for eligible customers
  • discovery+ Entertainment
  • Selected Hayu content

Sky describes the included streaming applications as representing more than £20 per month when valued against the relevant advert-supported plans. That calculation is useful, but it does not mean every household is receiving more than £20 of value. The practical saving depends on which services you would otherwise pay for, whether you already have annual or discounted subscriptions, and how much you value Sky’s own channels.

The services are integrated into Sky’s television experience across eligible Sky Stream and Sky Glass packages. Eligible Sky Q customers can also receive relevant app access, but the exact entitlement depends on the Sky package and platform. It is therefore important not to assume that every Sky customer receives every application.

“Free” does not mean the premium subscription

The most important qualification is the word included. The apps are included in the relevant Sky subscription; they are not necessarily the highest-tier subscriptions that those services sell independently.

Service Included Sky version What to watch for
Netflix Standard with Ads It is not Netflix Premium, which is the Netflix option associated with four simultaneous devices and Ultra HD.
Disney+ Standard with Ads It is an advert-supported tier, not the ad-free upgrade.
HBO Max Basic with Ads Sky’s comparison information describes two screens in HD; Standard and Premium upgrades can be purchased through Sky Marketplace.
discovery+ Entertainment The included content and features depend on the package terms.
Hayu Selected Hayu content This is not necessarily the same as a complete standalone Hayu subscription.

Sky Group announced that HBO Max Basic with Ads would be included for eligible Sky customers from 26 March 2026, with HBO Max integrated into the Sky experience. Disney+ Standard with Ads is likewise available only with qualifying Sky subscriptions rather than universally across the whole customer base.

There is another distinction that matters to picture and sound enthusiasts: the included streaming tiers are separate from Sky’s optional Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos pack. Sky describes that additional option as providing UHD/HDR and Dolby Atmos for Sky content. Paying for Sky Ultimate TV alone should not be taken as a promise that every included streaming app, film or programme will play in 4K, HDR or Dolby Atmos.

Why I would still pay extra with a premium home-cinema setup

Imagine watching on a 65-inch OLED television with a compatible sound system. On that kind of setup, the difference between a basic HD stream and a higher-quality 4K HDR presentation can be more apparent than it is on a small bedroom television. The same applies to immersive audio: a Dolby Atmos-capable system can make a supported soundtrack more valuable, provided the programme, subscription, device and connections all support the format.

That is why I would still consider paying separately for premium versions of the services I watch most. The additional spend would be buying better playback options, fewer or no adverts and, in some cases, more simultaneous screens—not access to a fundamentally larger catalogue.

HBO Max is the clearest example. If a major HBO series is something I specifically want to watch in the best available picture and sound quality, the Basic with Ads tier supplied by Sky may not be the version I want. Sky says upgrades to HBO Max Standard or Premium are available through Sky Marketplace. The exact features remain dependent on the plan and the title, so even a premium subscription is not a guarantee that every programme is available in every format.

Netflix follows the same logic. Standard with Ads is sufficient for viewers who want the shows and films and do not mind advertising. Netflix Premium is the relevant upgrade for a household that wants four-device access and Ultra HD where supported. A bundle that includes Standard with Ads has therefore not eliminated every reason to keep a separate Netflix payment.

When paying extra is likely to be worthwhile

The premium route makes the most sense when several of these statements describe your household:

  1. You have a large 4K or OLED screen. A larger display can make differences in source resolution, compression and HDR presentation more noticeable, although viewing distance and eyesight matter too.
  2. Your equipment supports the formats you want. The television, streaming platform, audio equipment and connections all form part of the playback chain. A subscription upgrade cannot make incompatible hardware produce Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos.
  3. You dislike adverts. Netflix Standard with Ads, Disney+ Standard with Ads and HBO Max Basic with Ads are not ad-free plans.
  4. You regularly watch premium-format content. Paying extra is harder to justify if most of your viewing is casual television that you would be happy to watch in HD.
  5. You need more screens or higher quality. A larger household may value Netflix Premium or a higher HBO Max tier for simultaneous viewing, while a smaller household may not.
  6. You are comfortable paying for convenience and quality separately. Sky can simplify the bill and the interface without necessarily being the cheapest way to obtain every premium tier.

These are decision criteria, not a claim that every viewer will see the same improvement. Format support varies by title, plan, device and playback chain.

  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Why most viewers may not need to upgrade

For a catalogue-first household, Sky’s offer is much easier to recommend. One subscription provides Sky’s own channels and originals alongside a broad selection of popular streaming content. If you mainly want to find something to watch without managing several separate bills and applications, the included plans may do exactly what you need.

You probably do not need to pay more if:

  • You watch on a standard Full HD television or a smaller screen.
  • You are not particularly bothered by adverts.
  • You rarely use 4K, HDR or immersive audio.
  • You mainly want access to Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max and discovery+ rather than their most advanced playback features.
  • You would otherwise subscribe to several services at their basic tiers.

The value is less convincing if you rarely watch Sky channels, already pay for several annual plans, have access through another household member, or regard 4K, HDR and ad-free viewing as essential rather than optional. That is an inference from the package structure rather than a universal price verdict: the right comparison is Sky’s current price against the services and features you would genuinely use.

Do not forget the broadband and hardware requirements

Sky Stream and Sky Glass use broadband rather than a satellite dish. Sky’s comparison information recommends at least 25 Mbps for Sky Glass and Sky Stream, while its Sky Stream product information gives a 30 Mbps minimum recommendation in the relevant service context. In practical terms, a household considering multiple simultaneous streams should check its actual connection and allow headroom rather than treating the lower figure as a guarantee of perfect performance.

A Sky Stream puck is also not a normal independent streaming box. Sky says it requires an active Sky subscription and will not function as a general-purpose standalone alternative to a Fire TV or Roku device. That makes a second-hand puck a poor substitute for buying a subscription-compatible streaming platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sky’s material says that up to three Sky Glass televisions and six Sky Stream pucks can be used per account or household, subject to the applicable service terms. That could matter to larger homes, but the limits do not turn the included subscriptions into unlimited simultaneous viewing rights.

If your television is the bottleneck

Before paying for a premium streaming tier, check whether your television can display the benefit. A 4K OLED TV can be relevant for viewers who want higher resolution, strong contrast and HDR support, but a new screen is not automatically the correct answer for every room or viewing distance. Compare the television’s supported HDR formats, available HDMI inputs, operating-system compatibility and audio pass-through behaviour before buying.

The same principle applies to sound. A Dolby Atmos soundbar can be a sensible category to investigate if your television and chosen content support Atmos, but no soundbar can guarantee Atmos from every Sky channel or streaming title. Confirm support for the formats you actually use, including the connection between the TV, Sky device and soundbar.

An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable may be useful in a high-bandwidth 4K/eARC setup, particularly when the existing cable is old or unreliable. It is an accessory, not a quality upgrade by itself. A new cable cannot create 4K, HDR or Atmos capability that the source, television, subscription or audio system does not provide.

So, should you pay extra?

Sky Ultimate TV is potentially strong value for mainstream households that want Sky channels plus several major streaming brands under one bill. The package is broad, convenient and likely to reduce the need for multiple entry-level subscriptions.

But the word “free” needs an asterisk. Netflix Standard with Ads, Disney+ Standard with Ads and HBO Max Basic with Ads are included tiers, not the premium versions. The difference matters if you own a large, capable display; care about HDR, 4K or Dolby Atmos; dislike adverts; or need more simultaneous screens.

My conclusion is therefore not that Sky’s bundle is poor value. It is that it solves a different problem from a premium streaming subscription. Sky solves aggregation and convenience. Paying extra can still be rational when the priority is the best available picture and sound from the programmes you watch most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Netflix, Disney+ and HBO Max really free with Sky?

No. Sky’s package includes specific tiers: Netflix Standard with Ads, Disney+ Standard with Ads and HBO Max Basic with Ads. Premium upgrades are separate and eligibility varies by Sky package and platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Sky Ultimate TV include 4K, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos?

Not necessarily. Sky’s optional Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos pack is described as an additional option for Sky content. Streaming format support also depends on the individual service plan, title, device, television and audio setup.

Is Sky Ultimate TV good value?

It can be good value if you want Sky channels and would otherwise pay for several included services. It is less compelling if you rarely watch Sky, already have discounted or annual streaming plans, dislike adverts or want premium playback as standard.

Can I use a second-hand Sky Stream puck without a subscription?

Sky says Sky Stream requires an active subscription and is not a standalone general-purpose streaming box. Check the current Sky terms before buying a used puck.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Sky Ultimate TV may be enough if your priority is breadth and one integrated bill. Keep—or add—premium subscriptions if you care about ad-free viewing, higher simultaneous-device limits, 4K/HDR or immersive audio and your complete playback system supports those features.
