Grouper’s “six-person triple blind date” brought three friends together with three people they had not met, usually for drinks at a bar arranged by the service. The available first-person account about a planned 2013 date is a preview, however—not a debrief—so it does not establish how the night went. The documented record explains the format, but cannot supply someone else’s awkward moments or memories.
What was a six-person triple blind date?
Historical Grouper was a dating service built around a group meetup: one participant recruited two friends, and Grouper matched their trio with another group of three. The service generally arranged drinks at a selected bar, making the first encounter a six-person outing rather than a one-to-one date. Y Combinator’s company profile describes its original premise as drinks between two groups of friends.
That group format changed the social setting. You had friends with you, and the first interaction happened face-to-face with the other trio. Instead of having to sustain a private conversation with one stranger, everyone could join a shared table conversation. The arrangement might make an unfamiliar meeting feel less formal; it could also make the group dynamic itself part of the experience.
How Grouper arranged the meetup
In its earlier format, participants submitted information about their group, and Grouper used application and Facebook information, algorithms, and human curation to make matches. It selected a venue and reserved a table. A 2013 GeekWire preview reported a fee of $20 per person that included the first round of drinks; that figure describes the service in that 2013 report, not a current offer.

Grouper later offered on-demand scheduling through its iPhone version, according to TechCrunch’s April 2013 coverage. The service handled some of the logistics that can otherwise slow down a first meetup: deciding where and when to go, and getting the groups to the same place. Founder Michael Waxman described the product’s purpose as letting the device “get out of your way and let you enjoy the real world,” in a quote reported by TechCrunch.
How “blind” the date really was
“Blind” fit the original idea of meeting the other group without first having a conventional one-to-one introduction. It did not describe every version of Grouper in exactly the same way. In a company post dated November 12, 2014, Grouper described a revised product with friend-of-friend choices, photos, mutual matches, no messaging, and mobile-first scheduling. That iteration gave users some information and choice before the meetup while keeping the meeting itself in person.

The distinction matters: the experience was not simply a mystery encounter in every iteration. The earlier service emphasized a curated group match and arranged outing; the 2014 version added choices and photos for some friend-of-friend matches. The company said it had facilitated “500,000 drinks,” a company-reported figure from that 2014 post, not an independently audited count.
What the surviving first-person account does—and does not—say
Taylor Soper’s GeekWire article, published November 14, 2013, is titled “The new-and-improved six-person triple blind date: Prepping for my first Grouper dating experience.” It records his anticipation before a planned date; he wrote, “I’m 23, single, and ready to freakin’ mingle.” The cited article does not provide the promised after-date account, so it does not tell readers whether the date was fun, awkward, successful, or even how it ended.

That means the headline’s promise of “reliving” an actual night cannot be fulfilled from this preview alone. Soper’s pre-date excitement is his documented voice, not evidence of another writer’s emotions or experience.

The historical dating startup began in New York in summer 2011 and was part of Y Combinator’s Winter 2012 batch; Y Combinator’s current directory marks it inactive. A business using the Grouper name today describes health and wellness programs, including Hello by Grouper, the Grouper Community, and the Grouper Partner Network. Its current services should not be mistaken for the old dating service, and the available sources do not establish that the dating product is operating now.

How the group format differed from one-to-one app dating
Grouper’s documented model offers a useful contrast without implying that all dating apps work alike. In its original form, participants brought friends, Grouper selected a match and handled venue logistics, and the first interaction took place in person. The 2014 product added mutual matching and photos but did not include messaging. In a one-to-one app model, users may instead browse profiles and message before deciding to meet; the specific sequence depends on the service.
The group meetup’s trade-off was built into its format: friends could make a first encounter feel more social, while six people sharing one table meant conversation and chemistry were not limited to a pair. Whether that sounded fun or awkward would depend on the people involved, not on a documented universal outcome.
