The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner classified her death as suicide in its August 29, 2024 determination. The cause identifies what led to her death; the manner classifies how the death occurred.
What the medical examiner determined
The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner certified hydrogen sulfide toxicity as Knight’s cause of death and suicide as the manner of death. The agency issued its determination on August 29, 2024, and stated that the cause was certified that day. Read the county medical examiner’s statement.
What happened and when
- July 19, 2024: Law enforcement conducting a welfare check found Knight unresponsive at a private residence. The medical examiner said her death was pronounced at 1500 hours.
- July 21, 2024: Slash and Meegan Hodges announced Knight’s death in a family statement. The initial announcement did not disclose a cause of death, according to CBS News’ contemporaneous coverage.
- July 22, 2024: A deputy medical examiner performed an examination, according to the county.
- August 29, 2024: The medical examiner certified the cause and announced the cause and manner of death.
What the public record does—and does not—say
The medical examiner’s determination establishes the official cause and manner. It does not explain Knight’s motive or provide a broader account of the circumstances. Her family asked for privacy and requested that social-media speculation be kept to a minimum as they grieved, as the Los Angeles Times reported.
The family described Knight as “a talented artist, a passionate dreamer, and a charming, lovable, sweet soul.” That characterization came from the family’s statement, reproduced by the Los Angeles Times; it was not a finding by the medical examiner.
