Superman: Escape from Krypton at Six Flags Magic Mountain is permanently closed. The coaster stopped operating for maintenance in September 2024, and park officials later confirmed it would not reopen. The tower remains in use for the neighboring Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom.
Why did Six Flags Magic Mountain close Superman?
Park president Jeff Harris said the aging ride had become too costly to maintain because replacement parts were difficult and expensive to source. He told the Orange County Register that putting money back into the attraction did not make business sense. The Los Angeles Times reported the permanent closure and Harris’s explanation on March 28, 2025.
When did the coaster close?
The ride went out of service for maintenance in September 2024. That shutdown was initially a maintenance closure; park officials subsequently confirmed it was permanent, as reported by the Los Angeles Times in March 2025.
What was Superman: Escape from Krypton?
The attraction opened in 1997 as Superman: The Escape. In 2011 it was renamed Superman: Escape from Krypton and redesigned to run backward. The Los Angeles Times reported that the ride reached 100 mph and climbed and dropped 415 feet; riders experienced 6.5 seconds of weightlessness. These are historical ride specifications, not an indication that the coaster is operating today.

Does the Superman tower remain?
Yes. The structure also supports Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom, so the coaster’s retirement does not mean the tower has been demolished. The Roller Coaster DataBase entry for the attraction notes the tower’s continued use for Drop of Doom. The available reporting does not establish what will happen to Superman’s trains, track, or other unused hardware.
Why does Superman still appear on park pages?
Six Flags’ Superman attraction page remains online, and the park’s scheduled ride-closures page does not list Superman. Those pages do not say that the coaster reopened. The dated report attributing permanent-closure confirmation to park officials is stronger evidence of its status than a still-published attraction listing.
