Six Flags America and its adjoining Hurricane Harbor water park in Bowie, Maryland, are closed. Six Flags announced in May 2025 that both would shut after the 2025 operating season; the Associated Press reported November 2, 2025, as their final day. The former park site has since changed ownership, but Prince George’s County has not confirmed a finalized redevelopment plan in the sources available through June 2026.
When did Six Flags America close?
Six Flags announced on May 1, 2025, that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor would close after the 2025 operating season. The Associated Press reported that the parks’ final operating day was November 2, 2025. This was a completed closure, not a temporary seasonal shutdown.
The company said the decision followed a review of its park portfolio. Its announcement also said it was committed to supporting associates affected by the closure process. The announcement did not establish a more specific reason for selecting this site to close. Six Flags’ May 1, 2025 announcement filed with the SEC.
Did the park operate for exactly 25 years?
Not exactly. The Associated Press reported that Six Flags America opened under that name in 1999. Its final day in 2025 came about 26 calendar years later, although the elapsed time depends on the specific opening date, which the cited report does not provide. The property also had amusement-park history before it became Six Flags America, so the 1999-to-2025 span describes the park under that name—not the full amusement use of the site.

What is happening to the former park site?
Prince George’s County reported on April 8, 2026, that a new ownership team had taken over the former property. The county also promoted a public town hall on June 25, 2026, for residents to discuss the site’s future. These updates establish a change in ownership and a public discussion process; they do not confirm an approved redevelopment concept, construction schedule, or future attraction. See the county’s ownership announcement and town hall notice.
Did Six Flags later reopen the Maryland park?
No reopening is established by Six Flags’ later portfolio-wide statement that parks would keep regular schedules and that 2026 passes would be honored. That statement applies generally across the company’s parks; it is not evidence that the closed Maryland location resumed operating. The closure announced in 2025 applied to both Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor.
