What did Garrison’s message say?
A Los Angeles Times report on a police report said Garrison sent a message to a group of people who had worked with the Brown family: “I want to hate you for sharing the good times. But I can’t. I miss these days.” The wording conveyed a longing for earlier times, but the message alone cannot explain his state of mind.

The Times reported that Janelle learned of the message and texted Garrison. After a brief exchange, she contacted her other children to see if someone could check on him in person. (Los Angeles Times, March 7, 2024)
What concerns did relatives and roommates report?
The same Times account said Garrison’s roommates and his brother Gabriel told police he had recently been struggling with a drinking problem and possible mental-health issues. These were statements reported to police, not a published clinical diagnosis or a complete account of his health. The article also said Gabriel thought Garrison seemed “OK” after starting a job at a medical facility.

What did Maddie say about his mental health?
In March 2024, Garrison’s sister Maddie publicly described mental health as a factor in his death. Us Weekly quoted her saying: “It wasn’t bullying, it wasn’t a lack of love that Garrison had. It was mental health.” That is Maddie’s perspective, not a medical examiner’s or clinician’s finding.
Us Weekly also reported Maddie’s view that Garrison compared himself with people on social media and felt he was not doing enough. This is her account of what he experienced; it does not establish social media as a cause. (Us Weekly, March 18, 2024)

Was his relationship with Kody strained?
The Los Angeles Times reported that Janelle told police Garrison was estranged from his father, Kody. The Independent also recounted Kody’s on-show comments about being out of touch with Garrison and Gabriel. This supports describing the relationship as strained, but it does not show that the estrangement caused Garrison’s death. (The Independent, March 5, 2024)
What was officially reported about his death?
TheWrap reported that the Coconino County Medical Examiner determined Garrison died by suicide and listed ethanol intoxication as a contributing factor. That finding establishes the official determination reported by the outlet; it does not, by itself, explain the full circumstances or identify a single cause behind his distress. In the early investigation, the Flagstaff Police Department said there was no indication of foul play at that time and that detectives were investigating, according to The Independent. The department’s statement described the status of the investigation then, rather than a broader explanation of what Garrison had been experiencing.

The public record includes a message about missing earlier good times, a reported check-in by Janelle, accounts from relatives and roommates about alcohol and possible mental-health concerns, Maddie’s later interpretation, and the medical examiner’s determination. These are different kinds of evidence: reported conversations, a family member’s view, and an official finding about the death. Together they provide context, but they do not establish one simple cause or reveal Garrison’s full private experience.
Janelle asked the public to respect the family’s privacy. In the statement reproduced by the Los Angeles Times, she remembered Garrison as “a bright spot in the lives of all who knew him.” (Los Angeles Times, March 7, 2024)
