Sinners is a 2025 period horror film in which Ryan Coogler makes blues performance part of the story’s pulse, not just its backdrop. Twin brothers Smoke and Stack return to 1930s Mississippi to open a juke joint, where the struggle to build a place of their own meets Jim Crow-era dangers and an undead threat. The result moves between historical drama, Southern Gothic and violent vampire horror.
What is Sinners about?
Written and directed by Coogler, the film follows Smoke and Stack, both played by Michael B. Jordan, as they come home and try to start over by establishing a juke joint. The Directors Guild of America places the story in 1930s Mississippi and describes the brothers’ ambitions unfolding amid the threats of the Jim Crow era and a supernatural menace. That combination gives the film two kinds of danger: the historical violence shaping daily life and the horror that enters the brothers’ world.
The juke joint is more than a plot destination. It gives the story a setting for music, gathering and performance, and helps connect the brothers’ plans to the film’s larger interest in what blues can carry. The Associated Press frames the film as a story of brothers returning to Mississippi in 1932, the transporting force of blues and love, and a violent vampire movie.
How does the blues shape the film?
Music is central to Sinners’ storytelling rather than incidental atmosphere. The film’s performances and blues-centered setting help establish the community the brothers hope to create, while the supernatural turn pushes the music into a more heightened, genre-driven register. That blend is part of the film’s identity: it asks the audience to move between a grounded period story and horror without treating either strand as a separate feature.

Coogler’s choices also give the landscape a role in the mood. In a May 2025 Directors Guild of America Q&A, he described the region’s isolation: “And I realized another thing about the south, specifically Mississippi, was this idea of isolation.”
What is Michael B. Jordan’s role?
Jordan plays both Smoke and Stack, twin brothers at the center of the film. The dual role gives the story a built-in contrast between two people sharing a history and a homecoming, while keeping their separate identities in view. The official film site confirms Jordan’s casting as both brothers.

How does the film balance history and horror?
Sinners brings vampire horror into a story already shaped by racial and historical danger. The supernatural conflict does not replace the period setting; it arrives alongside it. That mix gives the film a volatile tonal range, moving from the brothers’ effort to build a juke joint toward bloody genre violence while keeping blues and community in the frame.
The film’s approach will appeal most to viewers open to sharp shifts in register: it is not simply a conventional period drama with horror added, nor a vampire story that uses the past only as decoration. The AP’s description captures the breadth of that combination, though individual viewers may respond differently to how its strands fit together.
