On March 4, 2024, Sinéad O’Connor’s estate and Chrysalis Records jointly demanded that Donald Trump and his associates stop using her music at political rallies. Their statement specifically objected to the use of O’Connor’s performance of “Nothing Compares 2 U.”
What the estate and record label said
The joint statement asked Trump and his associates to stop using O’Connor’s music immediately. “As the guardians of her legacy, we demand that Donald Trump and his associates desist from using her music immediately,” it said, as reported by The Guardian on March 4, 2024.
The statement said O’Connor would have been “disgusted, hurt and insulted” to have her work misrepresented. It also referred to Trump as someone she had called a “biblical devil.” Those descriptions and the prediction about O’Connor’s reaction were the estate and label’s characterization in their joint statement; the phrase “biblical devil” was attributed to O’Connor by the Associated Press. The AP report and The Irish Times report also covered the demand.
Why “Nothing Compares 2 U” mattered
The statement named O’Connor’s performance of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” one of her best-known recordings. The song’s history helps explain why its use was particularly prominent in coverage: The Guardian reported that her version spent weeks at number one in the UK in 1990, while The Irish Times said it topped the charts in both Ireland and the UK that year. What the demand does—and does not—establish
The estate and label’s statement was an objection to the song’s use at political rallies and to what they viewed as a misrepresentation of O’Connor’s work and legacy. It was not, by itself, a reported court ruling or a finding that the use violated copyright or licensing rules. The reports describe the demand, not an analysis of applicable permissions or ownership.
The statement was made during Trump’s 2024 campaign for the Republican nomination. The cited reports establish that the estate and Chrysalis made the demand on March 4, 2024; they do not establish whether the song was used afterward, whether the campaign complied, whether later legal action followed, or the dispute’s present status.
