Simple Wedding Vows: How to Write and Deliver Yours

A practical guide to writing sincere wedding vows, choosing a length, reading them with confidence, and checking ceremony wording with your officiant.

Simple wedding vows can feel personal without being long: share one meaningful detail, say what you value about your partner, make a few specific promises, and finish with a clear commitment. Draft in your own voice, agree on length together, and check any legal wording with your officiant or local authority.

How to write simple wedding vows

Use a short structure to keep your vows focused while leaving room for the details that make them yours.

  1. Open with a direct address or memory. Choose a moment that says something real about your relationship, rather than trying to tell your whole story.
  2. Name what you appreciate. Pick a few qualities, habits, or ways your partner has shaped your life.
  3. Make specific promises. Choose commitments you can imagine living out, not just sweeping declarations.
  4. Close with a clear commitment. Say plainly what you are choosing or promising as you begin married life.

Prompts can help you find material: How did we meet? When did I know I wanted a future together? What have I learned from my partner? What do I want to thank them for, and what do I promise to bring to our marriage? Note ideas first, then keep only the strongest ones. The Knot recommends starting several months ahead; Toastmasters suggests setting aside a few quiet hours to reflect and write.

Simple wording starters

Starters such as “From the moment I met you…,” “I promise to…,” or “I vow to always…” can get a draft moving. Complete them with a true memory, quality, or commitment from your relationship. Treat examples as scaffolding, not wording to copy unchanged.

How long should wedding vows be?

There is no single prescribed length across the guidance consulted. Toastmasters recommends two to three minutes, or approximately 200–300 words; The Knot recommends two to three minutes and 250–300 words; celebrant Trudy the Celebrant recommends one to two minutes maximum. These are editorial recommendations, not formal rules.

Agree on a shared target with your partner and, if useful, your officiant. Read your draft aloud and time it: written words often take longer to deliver when you pause or become emotional. Trim long stories and repeated ideas so the promises remain easy to follow.

Can you read your vows instead of memorizing them?

Yes. Toastmasters says notecards or a small book are fine if they ease nerves, and The Knot notes that couples commonly read their vows rather than memorize them. Practice aloud beforehand and look up from the page occasionally to make eye contact.

A keepsake vow book is optional. You can use one to hold the final vows during the ceremony and keep them afterward, or use notecards or another small book. The wording and delivery matter more than the format.

Can you write your own wedding vows?

Whether personal vows can replace or supplement prescribed wording depends on the ceremony and jurisdiction. Do not assume that a rule for one location applies elsewhere; ask the officiant or registry handling your ceremony what wording is required.

Church of England Common Worship ceremonies

The Church of England says the official Common Worship vows cannot be rewritten for legal reasons: “The official vows cover all those things we hope for from a good marriage and are legally binding, so they can not be changed.” Couples can ask their vicar about adding a personal reading, poem, or excerpt.

New Zealand ceremonies

New Zealand’s official marriage-celebrant guidance permits couples to write their own vows if they include the required legal commitment, or similar wording, at some point in the ceremony. This is New Zealand-specific guidance, not a universal rule.

Oxfordshire civil ceremonies

Oxfordshire County Council’s guidance separates mandatory legal declarations and contracting words from optional personal promises, and provides wording choices. Its rules and wording apply to that local authority’s ceremonies; check with the relevant authority for ceremonies elsewhere.

How to make vows easier to deliver

  • Read the complete draft aloud and time it; revise sentences that feel awkward when spoken.
  • Use a page or cards with readable text and clear breaks so you can find your place.
  • Practice enough to feel familiar with the words, but you do not need to memorize them.
  • Make occasional eye contact instead of keeping your attention on the page throughout.
  • Ask your officiant to review the length or tone if you are unsure how the vows fit the ceremony.

Keep the focus on your partner. Avoid embarrassing anecdotes, intimate details, jokes at someone else’s expense, or criticism of family and friends. Consider whether religious language or a passage suits your ceremony and venue.

Choosing a style that fits both of you

Before drafting separately or together, decide what kind of exchange you want. These choices affect both the ceremony and how the vows feel when spoken.

  • Traditional wording or personal promises: Find out first whether prescribed legal words must be spoken. Personal promises may be an addition rather than a substitute.
  • Religious or secular language: Choose words that fit your beliefs and ceremony; ask the officiant about any service-specific expectations.
  • Reading or memorizing: Use notes if they help you feel present and steady. Practice either way.
  • Shorter or longer vows: Set a shared range so one person’s vows do not feel dramatically different in length from the other’s.
  • Private drafts or shared wording: Decide together whether the vows should remain a surprise, while still agreeing on length and tone.

A sample ceremony script, such as the Universal Life Church’s simple officiant script, can show how traditional-style vows fit into a short ceremony. It is an example, not a statement of legal requirements for every location.
