En “Ningyō-no-haka”, un capítulo de Gleanings in Buddha-Fields publicado en 1897, Lafcadio Hearn relata una creencia según la cual, después de dos muertes en una familia durante el mismo año, se hacía una tercera tumba para tratar de evitar otra. No se enterraba allí a una persona: el pequeño ataúd descrito por Hearn contenía una figura de paja.
Qué significa «siempre tres tumbas» en el relato de Hearn
La frase “There is a saying, Always three graves” aparece en el capítulo VI, “Ningyō-no-haka”, de Gleanings in Buddha-Fields: Studies of Hand and Soul in the Far East. Hearn la atribuye a Manyemon, un personaje que explica la práctica dentro del relato. La escena empieza con Iné, una niña que cuenta varias muertes en su familia.
Según la explicación de Manyemon, cuando dos miembros de una familia habían sido enterrados en el mismo año, se hacía una tercera tumba junto a las otras. Esa tumba era simbólica: en su interior se colocaba un pequeño ataúd con una figura de paja, no el cuerpo de otra persona. Sobre ella se levantaba una lápida pequeña con un kaimyō, un nombre póstumo que, en la narración, escribían los sacerdotes del templo. Se creía que construir esa tumba podía impedir una muerte más.
Qué quieren decir los términos del capítulo
- Ningyō-no-haka: el nombre romanizado del capítulo, que alude a una tumba de muñeca o figura. Esta descripción del sentido del nombre no es una traducción oficial.
- Wara-ningyō: la figura de paja que, según el texto, se ponía en el ataúd pequeño.
- Kaimyō: el nombre póstumo inscrito en la lápida de la tumba simbólica.
Qué permite afirmar la fuente histórica
La fuente directa es el libro de Hearn, publicado en 1897. El capítulo presenta la práctica mediante narración y diálogo; no es una encuesta ni un estudio que mida cuántas personas la seguían. Por eso, el pasaje permite decir que Hearn contó esta creencia y la atribuyó a sus interlocutores, pero no que fuera uniforme o generalizada en Japón.

Tampoco establece que el rito siga practicándose hoy. Un estudio académico posterior, “Practicing Japan. 35 Years”, examina el capítulo dentro de su historia de interpretación, especialmente como relato de terror. Ese contexto sirve para comprender cómo se ha leído el texto, no para demostrar la continuidad contemporánea de la costumbre.

“Ningyō-no-haka” es el capítulo VI de Gleanings in Buddha-Fields: Studies of Hand and Soul in the Far East. Para leer el pasaje en su contexto, consulta la transcripción de la obra de Hearn en Project Gutenberg y busca el capítulo VI.
