Musk disclosed a prescription and intermittent use in March 2024, then denied current drug use and disputed reports of more extensive use in May 2025. Those statements establish what Musk said, not a verified dose history or a medical explanation for his conduct.
The responsible question is therefore narrower: which effects are medically plausible during or after ketamine exposure, and what evidence would be needed before attributing a public figure’s behavior to the drug?
Key takeaways
- In a March 2024 interview with Don Lemon, Elon Musk said he had a ketamine prescription and used “a small amount once every other week” for negative or depressive mental states, according to The Associated Press’ report.
- In May 2025, Musk denied current drug use, said he had tried prescription ketamine years earlier, and disputed reports describing more extensive use, according to CBS News’ account.
- FDA labeling identifies ketamine-related risks including dissociation, hallucinations or delirium, emergence reactions, sedation, and increases in blood pressure and heart rate.
- Long-term or frequent nonmedical ketamine exposure has been associated with urinary-bladder injury, cognitive and psychological effects, and liver or biliary complications, but treatment under medical supervision is a different exposure.
- No reliable public evidence proves that ketamine caused Musk’s broader behavior, personality, political conduct, business decisions, or any particular incident.
What did Elon Musk publicly disclose about ketamine?
Elon Musk publicly disclosed prescribed or intermittent ketamine use in March 2024, but the public record does not establish a definitive current-use timeline.

In his March 2024 interview with Don Lemon, Musk said he had a prescription for ketamine and described using a small amount once every other week
for what he characterized as negative or depressive mental states. The Associated Press reported that Musk objected to the question as private while acknowledging the prescription. The Associated Press’ summary of the interview provides the relevant public account.
Reuters also reported that Musk said prescribed ketamine helped him function through low moods. In the same context, Musk said, If you use too much ketamine you can’t really get work done.
That is Musk’s personal statement, not a clinical measurement of an impairment threshold or proof of how much he used.
The public record changed in emphasis in May 2025. Musk denied current drug use, said he had tried prescription ketamine years earlier, and disputed reports that portrayed more extensive use. Those statements should be reported together rather than turned into a precise timeline that the available evidence cannot support.
| Public statement | What is supported | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| March 2024 interview | Musk acknowledged a prescription and described using a small amount approximately every other week for negative or depressive mental states. | The public sources do not establish the dose, route, formulation, treatment protocol, timing relative to any public event, or clinical effect. |
| May 2025 remarks | Musk denied current drug use, said he had tried prescription ketamine years earlier, and disputed reports of more extensive use. | The statements do not independently verify past exposure, establish a complete timeline, or prove or disprove allegations about specific symptoms. |
What side effects of ketamine can affect behavior?
Ketamine can temporarily affect perception, alertness, coordination, judgment, and physiological arousal, but a general pharmacological possibility is not evidence that ketamine caused a particular person’s conduct.

The FDA’s KETALAR prescribing information identifies cardiovascular stimulation, including increases in blood pressure, heart rate, and cardiac output. The same FDA labeling identifies emergence reactions
, with examples including vivid dreams, hallucinations, or delirium.
Based on the known effects described in the dossier, exposure could plausibly contribute to the following temporary experiences:
| Possible effect | What an observer or patient might notice | Why the effect cannot identify the cause by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Dissociation | Detachment from the body or surroundings, a sense that events are unreal, or an unusually distant presentation. | Dissociation can have medical, psychiatric, sleep-related, or substance-related explanations, and observation alone cannot establish ketamine exposure. |
| Perceptual changes | Unusual perceptions, vivid dreams, hallucinations, or confusion. | The relevant question is whether the symptom occurred during or soon after verified exposure and whether other causes were excluded. |
| Sedation and impaired coordination | Slower responses, poor coordination, reduced alertness, or difficulty completing tasks. | The degree of impairment depends on dose, route, individual susceptibility, interactions, and timing. |
| Emergence reactions | Agitation, vivid dreams, hallucinations, or delirium as acute effects change or wear off. | An emergence reaction is a recognized safety issue, not a diagnosis that can be made from a video or public statement. |
| Cardiovascular stimulation | Raised blood pressure or heart rate, which may accompany a visibly agitated or activated state. | A cardiovascular response does not demonstrate intoxication and may not produce any obvious behavioral change. |
Can ketamine cause erratic behavior, hallucinations, or dissociation?
Yes, ketamine can cause dissociation, perceptual changes, hallucinations, sedation, impaired coordination, and emergence reactions during or shortly after exposure; those effects still cannot explain Musk’s behavior without evidence of timing and clinical context.
The FDA-approved SPRAVATO label lists dissociation and increased blood pressure or hypertension among adverse reactions in adults treated for treatment-resistant depression. The 2025 FDA SPRAVATO label is relevant evidence for possible effects under that treatment protocol, but it does not establish what happened in Musk’s case.

A medication effect is most plausible for a particular episode when there is reliable evidence that the symptom began during an appropriate exposure window, the dose and route are known, and competing explanations have been considered. Public behavior alone does not supply those facts. An unusual post, an impulsive decision, an angry exchange, or an unconventional appearance is not a toxicology result or a clinical examination.
Is prescribed ketamine different from recreational ketamine?
Prescribed, monitored esketamine treatment is not equivalent to recreational ketamine use, uncontrolled compounded treatment, or an unknown dose taken outside medical supervision.
| Exposure context | What is known about the setting | How the evidence should be interpreted |
|---|---|---|
| FDA-approved esketamine treatment | SPRAVATO is delivered under a restricted, monitored treatment protocol, with FDA labeling that addresses dissociation and blood-pressure increases. | Safety findings from monitored esketamine treatment should not automatically be generalized to nonmedical or high-frequency exposure. |
| Prescribed ketamine disclosed by Musk | Musk said he had a prescription and described intermittent use, but the public record does not identify the formulation, route, dose, supervision, or treatment plan. | The word “prescription” does not show that Musk used SPRAVATO, nor does it establish impairment or an adverse effect. |
| Compounded ketamine for psychiatric purposes | The FDA has issued safety communications about compounded ketamine products, including concerns involving dosing, monitoring, prescribing, and product quality. | Risk depends on the product and clinical controls; compounded treatment should not be treated as identical to an FDA-approved product. |
| Recreational, frequent, or unknown-dose use | Dose, purity, route, co-used substances, and monitoring may be unknown or uncontrolled. | Long-term risk findings from this category should not be used to diagnose a person who has only acknowledged a prescription or intermittent use. |
The meaningful comparison is not simply “ketamine is safe” versus “ketamine is dangerous.” The relevant variables include dose and frequency, route and formulation, medical supervision, co-use with alcohol or other substances, underlying cardiovascular or psychiatric conditions, urinary or liver health, and whether the evidence concerns approved treatment, off-label treatment, or nonmedical use.
Can long-term ketamine use cause bladder problems?
Yes, chronic or high-frequency nonmedical ketamine exposure has been associated with urinary symptoms, ulcerative cystitis, and other bladder complications, but a reported bladder symptom does not prove ketamine exposure or ketamine-related injury.

Reviews of long-term or frequent nonmedical exposure have also associated ketamine with cognitive effects, persistent dissociative or psychological symptoms, and liver or biliary complications. A 2016 PubMed-indexed review of ketamine abuse and diversion discusses evidence involving 16 studies and 440 chronic ketamine users. That figure describes the reviewed evidence base; it does not measure Musk and does not establish that ketamine caused any behavior in him.
The evidence is more qualified for psychiatric treatment. A 2022 review of the long-term safety of ketamine and esketamine in depression treatment found that severe bladder pathology had not been reported in the available studies of ketamine or esketamine used according to psychiatric prescribing guidance, while cognition generally remained stable or improved in esketamine trials. Those findings should not be generalized to recreational or high-frequency nonmedical use.
A 2025 systematic review of urological symptoms after ketamine treatment for psychiatric disorders concluded that the long-term urological effects in psychiatric ketamine treatment remain incompletely characterized and emphasized better symptom monitoring and patient education. The conclusion supports caution and monitoring, not a claim that every ketamine patient will develop bladder disease.

The reviewed reporting establishes that Musk discussed a prescription and intermittent use in 2024, and that he later denied current use and disputed reports of more extensive use. The sources do not provide verified dose timing, toxicology, clinical examination, route, co-medications, or a controlled causal analysis linking ketamine to a particular statement, decision, or episode. The relevant public accounts are available from The Associated Press, Reuters’ report republished by Investing.com, and CBS News.
Reports alleging extensive use or bladder problems should remain allegations attributed to the reporting outlet or its sources. Musk disputed those reports, and the reviewed sources do not contain an independently verified clinical record confirming ketamine-related bladder injury or another specific adverse effect in Musk.
Other possible influences include sleep deprivation, stress, other medications or substances, medical conditions, personality, incentives, public-performance dynamics, and ordinary human error. None of those alternatives is established by the supplied sources either. Their importance is that a responsible causal assessment must consider more than one explanation.
No reliable statistic estimates what percentage of Musk’s behavior could be explained by ketamine, and no reliable statistic quantifies the probability that a specific public incident was ketamine-induced. Supplying a percentage would create false precision.

How should readers evaluate claims that ketamine explains a public figure’s behavior?
Readers should separate a person’s disclosure, the drug’s known effects, unverified allegations, and the evidence needed to connect a drug to a particular event.
- Start with the disclosure. Identify exactly what the person said, when the statement was made, and whether the statement concerned a prescription, current use, past use, or a general opinion.
- Separate recognized effects from a diagnosis. Ketamine can produce dissociation, hallucinations, sedation, impaired coordination, emergence reactions, and cardiovascular stimulation, but those effects do not mean that every unusual behavior is drug-related.
- Ask about timing. A causal claim requires more than evidence that exposure occurred at some point. The dose, route, formulation, timing, and duration relative to the incident matter.
- Check the treatment context. Monitored esketamine treatment, prescribed ketamine with unknown details, compounded products, and nonmedical exposure do not carry identical evidence or risk profiles.
- Look for independent clinical evidence. Without verified records, examination, toxicology interpreted in context, and information about other substances or medical conditions, a public diagnosis is speculation.
The evidence-based conclusion
Ketamine could plausibly cause temporary dissociation, perceptual changes, sedation, impaired coordination, hallucinations, emergence reactions, and cardiovascular stimulation. Chronic or high-frequency nonmedical exposure carries a different set of reported urinary, cognitive, psychological, liver, and biliary risks. None of that establishes that ketamine explains Elon Musk’s broader behavior or any particular public incident.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Musk has publicly described prescribed or intermittent ketamine use and later denied current use, while ketamine is known to cause short-term effects that can alter perception and behavior. The public evidence does not establish that ketamine caused Musk’s personality, decisions, political conduct, or any specific episode.
