Sicario 3 is still in development, but it does not have an official release date, filming schedule, final cast, or confirmed director. Producers Molly Smith and Trent Luckinbill have publicly described the project as close to moving forward, while Josh Brolin said in 2024 that it was getting closer. In an August 7, 2025 appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Brolin reportedly called the project “very, very real.”
That is meaningful confirmation that the sequel remains active—not proof that it has been greenlit, filmed, or scheduled. The project has often been associated with the working title Sicario: Capos and is intended to conclude the trilogy, most likely by continuing Alejandro Gillick’s story after Sicario: Day of the Soldado.
Sicario 3 status at a glance
| Question | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Is Sicario 3 happening? | Yes, as an active development project publicly supported by Black Label Media’s producers. |
| Is it officially greenlit? | Not established by the available evidence. Development is not the same as formal production approval. |
| Does it have a release date? | No official release date or release year has been announced. |
| Has filming started? | No verified public evidence located for this research confirms that principal photography has begun. |
| What is the reported title? | Sicario: Capos, although “Capos” should be treated as a working title rather than the final name. |
| Who is most likely to return? | Benicio del Toro is the strongest returning-cast expectation. Josh Brolin is plausible, but neither has a formal final-cast announcement in the available source material. |
What “confirmed” means in this case
The producers’ comments make Sicario 3 more than a fan rumor or an abandoned sequel listing. Molly Smith and Trent Luckinbill of Black Label Media have discussed the film publicly, said the team wanted to reunite the established characters, and described it as the intended conclusion to the trilogy. Their comments were reproduced on Black Label Media’s own press page.
But a film can be confirmed as being developed long before it receives final financing, a locked screenplay, a director, a cast contract, a production start date, or a distributor’s release commitment. None of those later milestones has been established here. The most accurate description is therefore: Sicario 3 is a real, active development project with no announced schedule.

The latest Sicario 3 updates
September 2023: Producers said the project was close
In an interview published in September 2023, Smith and Luckinbill said the third film was “very close.” They indicated that the project still had to get beyond the industry strikes and other creative and production conditions before moving forward. They also emphasized that the goal was not simply to manufacture another sequel; the film needed to justify the investment and finish the trilogy properly.
The producers confirmed that the screenplay had been written and rewritten repeatedly. That suggests substantial development work, but it does not mean that the current script is final or that the project has entered production.
April 2024: Josh Brolin gave a more cautious update
Josh Brolin, who plays CIA operative Matt Graver, said in April 2024 that the film was getting closer. His comments also introduced important uncertainty: Christopher McQuarrie was no longer involved, and Brolin said he did not know whether Taylor Sheridan remained attached.
Brolin further explained that the producers would not proceed unless they had a story worth the required investment. That position is consistent with the producers’ earlier quality-first comments and helps explain why the project has taken years to advance.

During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Brolin reportedly said he had recently heard that the project was “very, very real.” This is the latest update in the available research and supports the conclusion that development has continued.
It still does not confirm financing, a production start, a completed package, a final screenplay, or a release date. “Very real” is an update on the project’s existence, not a studio scheduling announcement.
What does Sicario: Capos mean?
Sicario: Capos is the working title most commonly associated with the third film. In the context of organized crime, “capos” generally refers to cartel bosses or senior leaders. The title may indicate that the story will move closer to the people controlling the cartel structure, but no official synopsis has confirmed that interpretation.
Some reports and fan theories connect the title with Alejandro’s possible movement toward cartel leadership. That is a reasonable inference from the ending of Day of the Soldado, but it remains speculation. The reported title should not be treated as proof that Alejandro becomes a cartel boss or that the film follows a particular plot.

The clearest narrative starting point is the ending of Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Alejandro is apparently executed after being caught in the United States–Mexico border operation, but he survives. He later begins mentoring Miguel Hernandez, the teenager drawn into the cartel world.
That ending creates a direct bridge into a third story: Alejandro has survived, Miguel has been exposed to the machinery of the cartels, and the conflict can now move beyond the operation-centered structure of the first two films. The reported “Capos” title may point toward a story about power at the top of the criminal organization.
Rank #2
However, no official story synopsis has been released. It is not confirmed that Miguel will return, that Alejandro will become a cartel leader, or that the third film will follow the exact events implied by the second film’s closing scene. The safest expectation is simply that Alejandro remains the central narrative link and that the story continues after Day of the Soldado.
Who could be in the Sicario 3 cast?
Benicio del Toro as Alejandro Gillick
Benicio del Toro is the strongest returning-cast expectation. The producers have repeatedly discussed the project in connection with del Toro and Alejandro, and a trilogy-capping story naturally centers on the character whose arc continued through both existing films.
That is not the same as a formal casting announcement. Until Black Label Media, the eventual distributor, or del Toro himself confirms a deal, his return should be described as strongly expected rather than officially locked.
Josh Brolin as Matt Graver
Josh Brolin’s return is plausible because Matt Graver is one of the franchise’s two principal recurring characters and Brolin has continued to discuss the project publicly. His own updates show that he is aware of the film’s development, but they do not establish that he has signed a final production commitment.
For now, Brolin belongs in the “likely or possible” category, not the confirmed-cast category.
Emily Blunt as Kate Macer
Emily Blunt’s return remains unconfirmed. Kate Macer was the moral and audience point of view in the 2015 original, but she did not appear in Sicario: Day of the Soldado.
Bringing Kate back would give the third film a natural connection to the first movie and could restore the perspective of an outsider confronting the border-war system. That is a compelling creative possibility, not evidence that Blunt has signed on. No official source located for this update confirms her involvement.
Other possible returning characters
Characters such as Miguel Hernandez may fit the story’s continuity, but supporting-cast reports should not be presented as finalized until an official announcement is made. The same caution applies to any lists naming actors beyond del Toro and Brolin.
Director and writer: what has changed?
Denis Villeneuve directed the 2015 Sicario, which was written by Taylor Sheridan. Stefano Sollima directed Sicario: Day of the Soldado in 2018. Neither Villeneuve nor Sollima has been confirmed as the director of the third film in the available research.
Christopher McQuarrie was previously reported as involved, but Brolin said in April 2024 that McQuarrie was no longer attached. Brolin also said he was unsure whether Taylor Sheridan remained involved. That means older articles presenting McQuarrie or Sheridan as definitively attached may describe an earlier version of the project rather than its current state.

The producers have said that Sheridan envisioned the material as a trilogy, which explains why his name continues to appear in coverage. It does not establish his current contractual or creative role. The current director and writing team should therefore be treated as unresolved.
Why has Sicario 3 taken so long?
The available comments point to several overlapping reasons:
- The screenplay has gone through repeated rewrites. The producers confirmed that the script has been rewritten multiple times.
- The film needs the right story. Brolin said the producers would not spend the necessary money without a story that justified the investment.
- The creative package has changed. McQuarrie is reportedly no longer involved, while Sheridan’s current status is uncertain.
- The industry strikes affected timing. The producers said the project was waiting for the strikes and remaining conditions to clear.
- The film is intended as a trilogy conclusion. The producers have framed it as a proper ending to the existing story rather than an interchangeable sequel.
These factors make the delay better understood as a development, quality, and packaging issue—not evidence that the project has definitely been canceled. At the same time, “not canceled” should not be confused with “in production.”
When will Sicario 3 be released?
There is no official release date. No reliable source in the available research provides a confirmed release year, theatrical date, streaming date, filming schedule, or principal-photography announcement.

Any article, social-media post, fan-made video, or search result assigning the movie to a specific year should be treated as an estimate unless it is backed by a new announcement from the producers, distributor, or an officially confirmed production source. The project’s development history makes precise predictions especially unreliable: a screenplay, returning lead, or positive producer interview can all exist without a production date.
The next meaningful release-related milestone would be an official announcement identifying the director, financing or production start, principal cast, distributor, or filming dates. A trailer would come substantially later than those steps and would itself be strong evidence that the film had moved beyond ordinary development.
How the first two Sicario films set up the third
The original Sicario premiered in 2015 under Villeneuve’s direction, with Sheridan’s screenplay and leading performances from Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin. Its story follows FBI agent Kate Macer as she is pulled into a covert border operation whose methods steadily undermine her assumptions about law, justice, and state power.
Sicario: Day of the Soldado followed in 2018. Sollima directed the sequel, which shifted the emphasis toward Alejandro and Matt Graver. The film’s ending left Alejandro alive and placed Miguel on a path that could connect personal revenge, cartel recruitment, and the larger structure of the drug war.

Lionsgate lists the original Sicario in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and digital formats. A Sicario 4K Blu-ray is therefore a legitimate way to revisit Villeneuve’s original film while waiting; it is not a pre-order or tie-in product for the unreleased sequel. Physical editions of Sicario: Day of the Soldado are also available through home-video retail listings, including Blu-ray editions documented by Blu-ray.com and retail listings.
For digital viewing, U.S. rental, purchase, and subscription availability for both films can change by service and date. Check a current guide for where to watch Sicario before assuming that a particular platform carries either title. Availability is also likely to differ outside the United States.

The most accurate answer
Sicario 3 is real and remains in development. The producers have publicly backed it, the screenplay has undergone extensive work, and Josh Brolin’s latest reported comments indicate that the project continues to exist. The film is also intended to serve as the conclusion of the trilogy, with Alejandro the most likely central character.
But the project has not reached the stage where a responsible update can promise a release date, filming, a complete cast, a director, or Taylor Sheridan’s continued involvement. Until those details are officially announced, Sicario: Capos is best understood as a developing sequel—not a coming-soon movie with a locked schedule.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Sicario 3 is an active development project and is intended to complete the trilogy, but it is not yet a dated, filmed, or fully cast production. Benicio del Toro is the likeliest returning lead, Sicario: Capos is only a working title, and every release-date or casting claim beyond those limited facts remains unconfirmed.
