Shriram Lagoo’s life moved between medicine, Marathi theatre, Indian cinema and public debate. Trained as an ear, nose and throat surgeon, he made theatre his full-time profession in 1969, became the first actor to play the protagonist of Natsamrat, and used his standing as an artist to support social causes and argue for rationalism.

Who was Shriram Lagoo?

Lagoo was born in Satara on 16 November 1927. He studied at BJ Medical College and trained as an ENT surgeon before turning to theatre. He died in Pune on 17 December 2019, aged 92, according to Hindustan Times.

His move into acting was not an early-career leap from school or college into the arts. Lagoo helped establish Pune’s Progressive Dramatic Association with Bhalba Kelkar, then became a full-time Marathi-stage actor in 1969. His debut was in Vasant Kanetkar’s play Ithe Oshalala Mrityu.

Why is Lagoo famous in Marathi theatre?

Originating the role in Natsamrat

Lagoo was the first actor to play the protagonist in V. V. Shirwadkar’s Marathi play Natsamrat. The character is a celebrated retired actor whose standing on stage contrasts with his neglect by family. The role brought together several of the tensions that marked Lagoo’s work: performance and identity, public recognition and private loss, and the vulnerability that can sit beneath authority.

His stage career extended well beyond that role. Playwright Satish Alekar described Lagoo’s work as a “syllabus of performance,” citing both Natsamrat and Surya Pahilela Manus, in which Lagoo played Socrates at 75 and delivered a 20-minute monologue, as reported by The Indian Express.

What films did Shriram Lagoo appear in?

Lagoo’s screen career crossed Marathi and Hindi cinema. His film breakthrough came with Pinjara; he also appeared in Jabbar Patel’s political dramas Saamna (1974) and Sinhasan (1979). Other representative titles reported include Himalayachi Saoli, Gharonda, Ek Din Achanak and Lawaris. Masala (2012) was described by The Indian Express as his last prominent screen appearance.

Patel, who directed Lagoo, praised his analytical approach to character and called him a “modern method actor.” He also recalled that Lagoo treated him as a colleague despite being his senior. These are a director’s judgments of a collaborator, rather than a formal description of Lagoo’s technique; they help explain why colleagues valued the thought he brought to roles.

Reports conflict on the year Lagoo received the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor award for Gharonda: The Indian Express gives 1980, while Tehelka gives 1978. The available accounts therefore do not establish a reliable year, so it should not be presented as settled fact.

What were Lagoo’s rationalist views?

Lagoo was an atheist who publicly argued for what he called “the retirement of God.” In 1992–1993, he travelled to villages for debates. His position differed from that of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar: Dabholkar focused on opposing exploitation in the name of God and religion, while Lagoo argued against belief in God itself.

Hamid Dabholkar, Narendra’s son and a rationalist activist, recalled Lagoo as a friend of his father with a shared rational outlook despite their differing views on religion. In his retrospective for Hindustan Times, he also described Lagoo volunteering and using his stature as an actor to support social causes.

Supporting social activists

In 1980, Lagoo and Ram Apte established the Samajik Krutadynata Nidhi to support full-time social activists. Lagoo also helped bring actors together for fundraising performances. This work places his rationalism not only in speeches and debates, but in practical support for people engaged in social action.

The account of his debates and activism comes from Hamid Dabholkar, a close family and movement connection. It documents sustained engagement, but does not provide an exhaustive record of Lagoo’s political positions.

How do the different strands of his legacy fit together?

Lagoo’s career is not reducible to a single celebrated role or film. His medical training preceded a midlife commitment to theatre; stage work established his reputation, while cinema carried his performances across languages and audiences. His rationalist arguments and support for activists extended that public presence beyond performance. Together, these strands make his legacy both artistic and civic—without requiring a claim that any one of them outweighed the others.
