Season 3 completes the three-season story Bill Lawrence originally pitched. Its ending moves Alice toward college in Connecticut and Paul toward retirement and closer family ties on the East Coast. TVLine reports Lawrence described it as the end of the originally planned three-season story. That is not the same as ruling out any future return: ScreenDaily reports the creators considered a time jump as a way to bring the characters together again, but that possibility is not a confirmed renewal or announced continuation.
