These shows work best as conversation starters: watch together, ask what a character may feel, and connect the story to everyday life.
What to look for in a feelings-focused show
A useful episode makes an emotion recognizable, gives children words for it, and shows a safe way to respond. Depending on the story, that might mean naming disappointment, noticing another person’s point of view, calming down, or working through a conflict. Choose a show that fits your child’s age and leaves room to talk; viewing by itself is not a substitute for caregiver connection.
- Age fit: PBS KIDS describes Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood for ages 2 to 4 and Alma’s Way for ages 4 to 6. Sesame Workshop’s feelings activities span young children through early elementary ages.
- Emotional focus: Look for emotion words and facial cues, coping with strong feelings, empathy, perspective-taking, or conflict resolution.
- Teaching approach: Daniel Tiger uses recurring songs and strategies; Sesame Street draws on a broad whole-child curriculum; Alma’s Way uses “Think Through” moments about decisions and perspectives.
- Practical access: Check availability in your country and on the service you use. Catalogs change, and the sources here do not establish a comprehensive current streaming list.
Shows that help children name and work with feelings
Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: songs and strategies for preschoolers
PBS KIDS describes the animated series as being for preschoolers ages 2 to 4. Built on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, it uses musical strategies rooted in Fred Rogers’s social-emotional curriculum. Stories address early-learning situations such as disappointment, and songs are designed to reinforce lessons children and caregivers can use in daily life. PBS KIDS’ show description explains the series’ approach. Fred Rogers Productions lists empathy, self-control and emotional regulation, social skills, and social-emotional learning strategies among its learning goals; it says stories are developed with early-learning specialists and formative research with children. Fred Rogers Productions describes those goals.
PBS KIDS summarizes a study comparing children who watched Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood with children who watched a nature documentary. Its account reports higher empathy, emotion recognition, and social confidence for children who watched the show when their parents regularly discussed its content. The summary says neither viewing alone nor discussion alone was sufficient in the study. This is a reported study finding, not a guarantee for every child or proof that the show alone produces lasting change. After an episode, ask about a character’s action—such as calming down or deciding whether to apologize—and invite your child to suggest what they might do in a similar situation. PBS KIDS recommends discussing positive actions, repeating a lesson, and practicing a strategy when a related moment arises in daily life.
Sesame Street: feelings, empathy and relationships
PBS KIDS describes Sesame Street as using a whole-child curriculum that supports cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. Its stated aims include helping children label and express feelings, cope constructively, empathize, build positive relationships, and resolve conflicts. Sesame Workshop also offers activities that make the subject concrete. Its Children’s Feelings resources include emotion-naming games and activities. In “Feelings Have Names”, children identify emotions through faces and bodies, name them, and talk about ways to work with them.
Alma’s Way: considering feelings and perspectives
PBS KIDS describes Alma’s Way as an animated series for ages 4 to 6. Its “Think Through” moments show Alma considering decisions and other people’s points of view. PBS says the series gives children opportunities to find answers to problems, express feelings, and respect different perspectives. The PBS KIDS page lists free videos on PBS KIDS; it does not establish availability on other services or in every region.

Ahlan Simsim: a distinct program and evaluation
Sesame Workshop reports on an evaluation led by Global TIES for Children at New York University in pre-primary classrooms in Jordan. Its summary says the evaluation found positive impacts on children’s ability to state a pictured emotion, identify other people’s emotions in social scenarios, and mention breathing as a strategy for managing strong feelings. This evidence concerns Ahlan Simsim in that specific program and study context; it should not be generalized to every feelings-focused television show. See Sesame Workshop’s evaluation summary.

Keep the conversation curious and supportive. Help your child notice what a character does or says, and make clear that feelings themselves are not wrong. The goal is to identify and communicate a feeling, then explore a safe next step together—not to make sadness, anger, worry, or disappointment disappear on demand.

- Notice clues: Ask, “How do you think the character feels? What did you notice?” Look at the character’s face, body, words, and situation.
- Name the feeling: Offer a word if your child is unsure, without insisting on one answer. You might ask, “Have you ever felt that way?”
- Explore a response: Ask, “What could the character try next?” Discuss a coping strategy or a way to communicate with someone else.
- Connect it to life: Ask, “What helps you when you feel that way?” If a relevant moment occurs later, invite your child to try the strategy together.
PBS KIDS advises naming and discussing emotions and validating a child’s feelings; it also suggests practicing facial expressions and identifying emotions. Sesame Workshop recommends asking children how they feel, noticing facial and body clues, naming an adult’s own feelings, and discussing coping strategies such as taking a few breaths.
