Spoilers for the final book in Jenny Han’s trilogy and the television adaptation’s ending. Belly’s line about her failed engagement to Jeremiah—“we just weren’t meant to be,” after reflecting that they may have rushed toward marriage to prove something—shouldn’t necessarily carry over to the show unchanged. In the book, it offers a generous retrospective summary. On screen, where their relationship has been shown through a different history of compromises and imbalance, the same thought could feel less convincing. That is an interpretation, not a rule the adaptation has to follow.
What does Belly’s line mean in the book?
In We’ll Always Have Summer, the third and final book in Han’s trilogy, Belly looks back on her broken engagement to Jeremiah. Her reflection suggests that they entered marriage with good intentions, perhaps trying to prove something, but were ultimately not right for each other. It is a retrospective judgment: Belly can acknowledge that the relationship failed without dismissing what she and Jeremiah felt or intended at the time.
The book’s final chapter then jumps ahead. After Belly cancels the wedding, she studies abroad in Spain, reconnects with Conrad through letters, and eventually marries him years later, with Jeremiah at the wedding. TheWrap’s August 27, 2025 account of the book ending describes Belly as 23 and nearly 24 at that point. TheWrap’s account of the ending provides the plot context for why the line belongs to a later, reflective version of Belly.
Why might it sound different in the show?
The concern is not that the sentence is inherently wrong. It is that a line can mean something different when viewers have watched a relationship unfold in another way. The adaptation has emphasized persistent imbalances and compromises between Belly and Jeremiah. Against that screen history, a tidy conclusion that they had good intentions but simply were not meant to be might soften the friction the show has made visible.

That is an argument about emotional continuity, not a claim that the show must condemn Jeremiah or that Belly could not arrive at a forgiving view. The line could still work if the series earns it through what Belly experiences and understands before she looks back. It may be less effective if it appears as a borrowed explanation that does not quite match the relationship the television story has shown.
How does the show change the book ending?
The series gives Belly’s time away from the love triangle a different setting and more narrative space. Instead of Spain, the television version sends her to Paris and substantially expands her independent life after the engagement. In a September 15, 2025 interview, the Los Angeles Times reported on that expanded epilogue and Han’s explanation of the Paris story. The interview with Han connects the change to Belly’s chance to leave the Cousins Beach bubble and discover herself.

Han put the idea plainly: “I think you have to find out who you are alone before you can really be with somebody else.” That emphasis matters to the line in question. The more the show makes Belly’s independent life a meaningful part of her story, the more her eventual understanding of Jeremiah can emerge from her own growth rather than from a single sentence carried over from the novel.
Does an adaptation need to preserve the line?
No. Han has described the series as an adaptation for a new medium, not an exact reproduction of the books. In a Variety interview relayed by Entertainment Tonight, she said: “My priority has always been that I want fans of the book to feel really satisfied by the story we’re telling, but also for them to know that this is an adaptation in a new medium, so it’s not going to be exactly the same.” Entertainment Tonight’s report on the book-to-series changes attributes the comment to Han’s Variety interview.

That principle leaves the creative choice open. A television script can keep the thought, reshape its wording, or let the actors’ scenes and Belly’s changed perspective convey the same idea without repeating the book’s phrasing. The important test is whether her reflection feels earned by the story the show has actually told.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So should the show include it?
It should be cautious about using the line unchanged. The book’s version makes sense as Belly’s later, compassionate account of a relationship that ended; the show’s expanded Paris story gives the adaptation another route to show how she reaches her own conclusions. If the screen version keeps the thought, it needs to feel like Belly’s understanding after everything she has lived—not a neat explanation pasted onto a more complicated relationship.
