Director Shoojit Sircar describes I Want to Talk as a simple, slice-of-life story about family, fathers and daughters, and everyday life. At its center is an NRI father-daughter relationship that unfolds over time; the cancer diagnosis in the plot sets the story in motion, but Sircar’s account emphasizes people and emotional observation rather than a medical explanation.
What is I Want to Talk about?
Abhishek Bachchan plays Arjun Sen, a marketing professional and father. Amazon’s January 18, 2025 announcement describes the film as a 100-day journey in which Arjun, after a life-altering cancer diagnosis, tries to reconnect with his estranged seven-year-old daughter. The 100 days are part of the fictional premise, not a medical statistic or guidance about cancer.

That family focus matches Sircar’s shorthand for the film. In an October 24, 2024 interview with Scroll, he called it a simple, slice-of-life story about families, fathers and daughters, and everyday life. He described following an NRI father and daughter through time, suggesting a relationship-centered film rather than a plot built chiefly around the diagnosis.
How did Sircar say the film came about?
Sircar said the idea came to him while he was at home during the COVID period. He and writer Ritesh Shah then began developing it, according to the Scroll interview. The available interview excerpt establishes that origin and the broad family premise; it does not provide further detail about the writing or production process.

How does Sircar approach emotion and casting?
In a January 29, 2025 interview with NDTV, Sircar said emotions in a film come from personal experiences and observations, as well as what the story and its characters go through. He added that actors need time to understand where the director’s emotions are coming from. His comments frame the film’s emotional register as a blend of lived observation and the specific demands of the characters.
Sircar also said his friend Arjun Sen was the real-life basis for the protagonist and had undergone life-altering surgeries. That connection informs the character’s origin, but the film remains a fictional story; the reported details do not establish medical advice or a general account of cancer treatment.
Rank #2
Sircar’s casting rationale for Bachchan centered on the actor’s warmth, gentleness, humor and realism. He said the story was “simple storytelling,” and described those personality traits as precisely what he wanted for the role. The casting choice, as he explained it, served the human scale of the father-daughter story.
