Goku’s Kamehameha is one of Dragon Ball’s defining attacks, but he did not invent it. Master Roshi created the technique, and Goku learned it by watching him. Its story runs from a copied energy blast in early Dragon Ball to the flexible attack—and even means of movement—that Goku uses in the Z-era story.
Roshi created it; Goku copied it
The Dragon Ball Official Site describes the Kamehameha as the Kame School’s signature technique: its user gathers latent energy inside the body and releases it from the hands in a powerful blast. Master Roshi developed the move. Goku reproduced it after seeing Roshi perform it once, turning observation into an early demonstration of his unusual ability to learn through imitation. The official technique compendium identifies Goku’s first manga use in Tale 15, when he fires it at the Fiat 695 at Fry-pan Mountain. That is an early Dragon Ball moment, not a first appearance in Dragon Ball Z.
How the technique changes in the manga
From a straight blast to a bending attack
Goku’s Kamehameha does not remain a simple beam aimed in a straight line. In the Great Demon King Piccolo story, he uses a version that bends its trajectory, showing that he can alter how the attack travels rather than merely increase its force. The official site’s Goku technique compendium also records the Super Kamehameha as a stronger form. These examples make the technique adaptable: its use can change with the problem Goku faces.
A blast that can propel him
Goku also fires the Kamehameha from his feet. The blast’s force pushes him through the air, so the technique serves as propulsion as well as an attack. This use, also documented in the Great Demon King Piccolo compendium, turns a move associated with a two-handed stance into a way to change position during a fight.

The Kamehameha in the Z-era manga
Against Raditz
In Tale 201, Goku uses the Kamehameha against Raditz. The moment places Roshi’s once-copied technique in a fight with a major threat in the Z-era story. The official site’s manga tally identifies the Raditz use as part of its tale-by-tale review.
Against Vegeta’s Galick Gun
In Tale 231, Goku counters Vegeta’s Galick Gun with the Kamehameha. Here the technique meets another energy attack head-on, making it a direct contest between the fighters rather than simply a blast aimed at an opponent. These references are to the original Japanese Jump Comics manga’s tale numbering, not episode numbers.

What the official manga count does—and does not—show
The Dragon Ball Official Site’s editorial division counted 67 Kamehameha instances in the original Japanese Jump Comics manga, including 39 attributed to Goku. Its criteria include techniques ending in “ha” and uses reasonably inferred from a character’s movements. The site explicitly says this was an independent editorial investigation, not an officially recognized statement of fact. The figures therefore describe that editorial team’s count of the manga; they are not a count of the Dragon Ball Z anime or every appearance across the franchise. Read the site’s methodology and examples.
One later example in the Dragon Ball Z anime
The manga provides the detailed chronology above, but it should not be mistaken for a complete history of the anime. One documented later anime example comes in Dragon Ball Z episode 195, when Goku uses a close-range Kamehameha against Paikuhan. The official site’s Paikuhan feature identifies that scene. It illustrates the move’s continued use at close quarters, but it is one example, not a tally of Goku’s anime appearances.

Why the move remains distinctive
The Kamehameha’s history is a progression in how Goku uses what he learned: first copying Roshi, then directing and strengthening the blast, changing its trajectory, and using its force to move. The Raditz and Vegeta confrontations show it answering major threats in the Z-era manga; the foot-fired version shows that its purpose need not be limited to striking an enemy. Its signature pose is recognizable, but its defining feature is how much Goku can do with the technique.
