Shekhar Kapur was announced as director of a screen adaptation of Amitav Ghosh’s Ibis Trilogy in March 2019. Despite headlines calling it a “film adaptation,” the announcement and contemporaneous reporting described a drama series. A later report named Michael Hirst as writer, but the sources available do not establish whether the project went into production, was released, or was cancelled.
Is the Ibis Trilogy adaptation a film or a series?
The announced project was described as a drama series, not a feature film. Endemol Shine Group’s 29 March 2019 announcement said Kapur would direct an adaptation of the novels for the international market; a contemporaneous Press Trust of India report published by The Indian Express also called it a series. The word “film” in some versions of the headline should not be taken as confirmation of a feature-length movie.
What was announced, and who was attached?
The 2019 announcement named Artists Studio, Endemol Shine India, and DoveTale Media as partners. It said DoveTale had initially acquired the book rights, and named Justin Pollard as historical consultant and story editor. The team was still seeking a lead writer at that point, according to the Endemol Shine Group announcement.
In December 2019, trade publication Televisual reported that Michael Hirst had joined as writer and that Tiger Aspect would lead production. That report is evidence of a further development attachment, not proof the series was filmed or completed. See Televisual’s report.

What is the latest known status?
The cited project-specific reports establish that the adaptation was announced in 2019 and that Hirst was later reported as writer. They do not establish a production start, release, distributor, streaming platform, cancellation, or rights lapse. Its status after those reports is therefore not established by these sources; it would be inaccurate to describe it as released, cancelled, or currently in production on this evidence.
Amitav Ghosh discussed an earlier film prospect in a 2014 interview, saying it had been expected to be made but had not raised the necessary money. That predates the 2019 series announcement and does not establish the fate or rights history of the later project. The interview is available from Hindustan Times.

Which books make up the Ibis Trilogy?
The adaptation was based on Ghosh’s three novels:
- Sea of Poppies
- River of Smoke
- Flood of Fire
The official announcement placed the story in mid-19th-century Asia, describing intersecting lives amid the opium wars involving Britain, India, and China. Kapur’s statement highlighted the movement of opium from cultivation in India to China, indentured labor, and characters from India, America, and China. These are descriptions of the novels and announced adaptation, rather than an independent historical account.

What Kapur said about the project
In the 2019 announcement, Kapur said: “I have always been fascinated that the drug trade was the engine for the Industrial Revolution. Amitav Gosh’s books brilliantly bring out the vast epic and emotional tale of opium, from its beginnings in India where it is grown and onto China where it is pushed by drug lords. The story also follows the journeys of indentured labour from India to colonies around the world and tells the intriguing tales of people from India, America and China at a time when modern history was being formed. I’m very much looking forward to collaborating with Endemol Shine in this gripping series that could run into many seasons.” The spelling “Gosh” is retained here as it appears in the quoted statement.
